    Default Safe Alpha HP

    What would be considered a "safe" amount of HP to bolt up to a merc alpha 1 drive? The boat is an 86 sea ray Pachanga with the original drive.

    Providing the clearances are right, you use good oil, and keep the WOT launches to the minimum, 350 HP would be cool before you need to start getting real trick or go with a Bravo (same hull cutout).

    Some say less, some say more, but I have personally done a little over 350 HP on an MR drive and it held up.

    The biggest problem was heat generation in the top end (read; drive shower).

    A Merc trained guy I know said 400 if you don't hammer it or twist it over about 5000-5200 max.

    so a drive shower is a must with anything around 350hp? is there any one brand that should be considered?

    I would recomend a drive shower on most applications. They pretty much all do the same job, some are just form over function....

    I have done internal drive showers using water from the pump with some good results, the negative is it takes away from cooling capacity for the engine (about 5%)

    The heavier the boat the less power the drive with live with, heavy boats tend to have more drag and thus work the drive harder.

    A Pachanga Ey?

    My best friend owns a pristine 32' pachanga, twin 454's with alphas. Both drives are untouched and we use that boat pretty hard. Only running 21 cleavers as well...

    His previous boat was the smaller pachanga (22?) and it was an alpha. His uncle still owns it, and has recently put an M-1-SC procharger on it. Seems to be holding but who knows how long!!

    Google Summit drive shower. It is the best from what I have read. It is what I am going to use. On independent test it drops temp apx 50 degrees.
