Default Trailer Regi // AZ to CA

So I got a boat that was registered in Ca. The seller had the CA pink slip and a current regi for the boat. The trailer is registered as AZ permanent. Seller wrote a bill of sale for the boat and the trailer. He used the CF# for boat and the license plate number for the trailer. I didn't think anything of it. Went to DMV. They had no problem registering the boat. But with only a plate # and bill of sale for trailer, they said they couldn't do it. Went back today hoping to hear different from a different DMV employee (don't laugh, it's worked like night and day before). They said no way, no how without a current copy of the trailer registration from AZ. I talked to the seller and he acts like it's no big deal. Says that it's in his sister's name who lives in AZ still, says he'll get a copy of it and give me a call when he gets it. I feel like I screwed up by not making sure to get a copy of the current AZ regi BEFORE buying it. I don't really want to leave it alone and drive around with a AZ plate on it and NO paperwork........ But,,, If he can't come up with the regi card, what are my options?

Check with CHP - they will locate and verify the trailer "Vin" number, if there is one, if there isn't a Vin number, they will assign and tag the trailer with a number. Be sure you explain your problem to them. A statement of facts (DMV form) helps. DMV will then register the trailer. Remember - California wants your "Money" !!!

Thanks for the suggestion.. I have to put tires and fix lights on it before I can tow it anywhere. As soon as I get it roadworthy, I'll take it up to local CHP office and see what they can do. There is no VIN stamped in to i t anywhere. I had one other Giroux trailer and it was just a foil sticker on tongue. Again, thanks for the idea...

You should be able to get a bond thru DMV. I think they will issue a new title after a year grace period.
    Pain in the ass.

I am in the same boat. (Punny). I just bought a boat and trailer from Colorado. There was no VIN numbers on the trailer. You have to make an appointment with a CHP VIN officer in your county. There is only one per office and when they go on vacation, you have to wait until they get back. LA County will take over 2 months to get an appointment and in my area, they would not even take any more appointments until mid April. The trailer must have a VIN, a Series Number, and a Model Type stamped on it.
    I don't know what I don't know because I forgot !!!

Finally got this sorted out with lots of help from a friend. I'll start off by saying I'll NEVER buy another trailer that does not come with the the right paperwork. CHP kept saying they needed a request from DMV to verify VIN and DMV kept saying I needed paperwork I couldn't get to make an apt to get my VIN verified. I would have passed on this deal in a heart beat had I known what a Pain In The [email protected]@ this was going to be. Anyway..... A buddy of mine has a VIN verifying business that he runs on the side. Basically he works with a private DMV office as a state certified VIN verifier on cases like mine. He did pretty much what everyone has said to have CHP do and in my case filed the paperwork with his DMV contact. I now have the CA plate in hand and a new VIN tag on trailer.
