I tow my boat at 60 mph- I have got up to 70 passing a few times. But I have been passed like I am standing still by people towing boats- Going 75+...That is a recipe for disaster.

Of course, I did have to learn a lesson.....When I had just bought my boat(June 1999) and was heading up to Trinity Lake at 5:30 in the morning(July 1999), I discovered that the ball clamp on the trailer needs to be checked for tightness- and that the safety chains work! I was towing with my 99 Formula, and the boat hopped off the ball on 80 as we passed the 580 cut-off for marin county....The only damage was the trailer tongue support- and my "I grew up boating...I know it all" mentality.....

I check my trailer just before I get on the freeway- Every freaking time; Ball-clamp tight, chains on, light connector...connected, back strap tight, hat, towels, keys, etc NOT laying on the boat seats.....If I have traveled long enough getting to the freeway, I even feel the hubs for heat.....

Be careful- and don't be arrogant....Even the best of us forget something sometimes.....

I had a ball come off once. Bought a boat and as I was backing up the guy selling it guided me on the ball and then as I went back he already "locked it down". I watched him put the chains on and we shook hands and I drove off. Get to the first stop sign the trailer pops off and slams into the truck's bumper putting a nice dent in it. The hitch was still locked. He just never got it over the ball.
Something I have noticed with you flatty guys is you don't have transom tiedowns. My boat has to or it will slide over the fenders going around a corner. If he would have had the transom tied it wouldn't have went anywhere.
