My wife and I are considering a new/used car for her. Safety and style. Done with the domestics. My neighbor is a fireman/emt, he says the BMW and Mercedes seem to be the safest cars. He told me that it's amazing the impacts he's seen people survive in them.
My wife really likes the Audi s5 and a5. Anyone here currently/have owned one? Any personal experience, reliability, safety, performance...?

Any and all comments are appreciated.

Nissan, Toyota, and Honda. What do these cars have in common? You BUY them.

BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Cadillac, Infiniti, and Lincoln. What do these cars have in common? You LEASE them.

Only a fool buys a luxury car. Luxury cars lose a ton of money as soon as they leave the lot and the minute the warranty expires you are screwed. Hence the reason a 5 year old luxury car is 1/4 the original price.

I love GM's LSx series motors but usually their cars are extremely unrefined (exception being the Holden cars i.e. GTO, G8, etc.) and the automatic transmissions are weak. GM uses torque management to keep from killing the transmissions. I've owned lots of newer GM vehicles. I just sold my street race '99 Z28 in October after having it almost ten years and I can honestly say that the only good factory part of car was the motor. The Buick LeSabre Limited that I traded in on our new Lexus RX350 was absolutely falling apart at 112k miles when we got rid of it.

I put 5k miles a month on my daily drivers (my mileage is tax deductible) and here's my experience with my latest GM's:

2000 Chevy 4x4 truck (had 82k miles when sold and spent more money in the year I owned it fixing shit than I did paying on the loan)

Radiator split due to cheap plastic ends
belt tensioner broke
heater core cracked
new u-joints
new front hubs
two GM alternators
burnt out taillight/signal/marker bulbs constantly
etc.

Buick LeSabre Limited (112k miles when sold)

ALL front suspension bushings came apart and fell out
ALL power window motors went out
computer went bad
EGR fitting in intake melted the intake (replaced entire intake to fix)
heated seats quit working
burnt out taillight/signal/marker bulbs constantly
etc.

Z28 Camaro (body had 107k miles on it/drivetrain was all replaced)

knock sensor went bad
computer went bad (two bad injector drivers)
burnt out taillight/signal/marker bulbs constantly
A/C idler pulley (bearing) went bad

I wouldn't put Acura and Lexus grouped in with BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Cadillac, and Lincloln though. Lexus offers a 100k mile bumper-to-bumper warranty on their certified preowned vehicles.

If you want to know what is gonna be reliable for years, go pick up a Consumer Reports yearly book.

Back to Audi, I own a 2008 S6 and it by for the best car I have ever had. Drove all the comparable E63, M5, CTS-V, STS-V. S6 is not the fastest but the most refined and understated. Have had zero factory issues with zero costs. I dispise auto dealers espically service depertments, and Audi was more than tolerable when a tire came apart, (see operator error) BTW the new CTS-V coupe sounds great on paper but is ugly, go with the wagon it will be a collector if you can get one.

I like the Audi's but overall Mercedes seem to hold up better. The key for no warrenty is finding a good indi shop. My S430 has 180K on it and she still looks new inside and out. And thats why I love Mercedes--even my 91 420SEL shows very little wear evidence. Mercedes just are tough and don't wear out like most other cars. Second I could take both these cars or my new to me 600SL to a dealer and spend $420 on an oil change or into my buddies shop--price of oil and some beer.

Why I like used Mercedes--you can find one owner cars well serviced by their rich owners. More so than any other used car out and about! Ones that have had full inspection service that the dealer fixing anything that could go wrong, open checkbook. So when you buy it, 99% of the time not much will go wrong--they are reliable. For Women, they also come with life of the vehicle roadside assistance free and regardless of year. If my 91 breaks down and eventhough I'm the second owner. I can call the 800 number in the glovebox and I'm rescued! For daily driver transportation I'll never buy anything other then a Mercedes. Had 300E, 190's, 500, 600SL's, 560SEL, 420SEL, S430, etcetera................. I've never had a huge bill or break down with any of them!!!!!
