7th largest in "recorded history".....I'd wager there have been far more and larger through unrecorded history.

Geologically this is just another event and there will be others.

Nevertheless......My thoughts are with the Japanese folks and others who've had to experience this natural disaster.

By the way did anyone take note that Tom Brown's recent thread brought up the subject of earthquakes? Apparently Brown's body has some type of natural event sensing system going on.......A "Canadian Karnac" or something, aye??????

A lot of stations have been added then some taken off line. I bet the ones taken off line had very little activity. Being this was the 7th largest and in 1960 only 31 stations were monitored it was the 7th largest that they know about. In 1990 there were 1451 station and by 2000 there were 2231 stations. I doubt the sky is falling but they do say the north pole is relocating

Nawwww, they're smarter and wiser than to attempt to rely on windmills and the sun and big assed batteries. Good thing WWII happened when it did or we'd be speaking Japanese today as roles have reversed somewhat on how many issues are done.

    Geomagnetic Anomalies
Occasionally, at random intervals, the Earth's magnetic field reverses. New rock formed from magma records the orientation of Earth's magnetic field at the time the magma cools. Study of the sea floor with magnometers revealed "stripes" of alternating magnetization parallel to the mid-oceanic ridges. This is evidence for continuous formation of new rock at the ridges. As more rock forms, older rock is pushed farther away from the ridge, producing symmetrical stripes to either side of the ridge. In the diagram to the right, the dark stripes represent ocean floor generated during "reversed" polar orientation and the lighter stripes represent the polar orientation we have today. Notice that the patterns on either side of the line representing the mid-oceanic ridge are mirror images of one another. The shaded stripes also represent older and older rock as they move away from the mid-oceanic ridge. Geologists have determined that rocks found in different parts of the planet with similar ages have the same magnetic characteristics.

There have been earthquakes and wars among nations since the beginning of time. This is nothing new or biblical. Sorry Doc, just the way I see it.
Don't sweat it John, for the end of times, as stated in the Bible to actually take place, we'd have to have wars, rumors of wars coupled with earthquakes in divers places, floods, famines, pestilence and we are always safe so long as there is no unrest in the Middle East as foretold. Eat, drink and be merry they say!

But if their were no wars and every body in the middle east all suddenly got along, along with all the other things you listed. if those normal events weren't happening i would be very worried
I see those as sort of a way of the world letting off steam and would be very worried if that wasnt happening.

Remember that all these earthquake paterns happen over geological time...meaning millions of years; That big quake in Sumatra set the stage for a number of others around the Ring of Fire....I kind of thought there would be more big ones in the decades ahead....Also, there is very definite proof of a mag 9 up off the WA coast in 1700....including JAPANESE records of an "Orphan" Tsunami in that year.

Doc, if the Trump sounds, I want to come to your house....at least, can I drop your name.....come to think of it, that might not do me any good, if they actually ask you about me.....

Well, another quake just hit off of Tonga 6.8 in magnitude and yet another off Northease Japan 6.1 in magnitude within the last few minutes.
Yeah, I'd call this increased activity, myself. I am fully aware of many who will knock themselves out to prove how circumstantial this is but, then again, they may not read the same books I do?

Nuclear bombs, not nuclear power. There is a huge difference, and most Americans don't understand the concepts or the physics behind the two enough to discriminate.

As we all know, the pressure builds between the tectonic plates which essentially "float". The release of that pressure, causes what we call an earthquake. This release now puts strain on another area, and when that releases, you have another earthquake. Or, the plate released from the first earthquake is now "floating" and will hit the other tectonic plate resulting in a quake. That's what I remember from my books.

This is intresting, Take a look about 3/4 through the page. Japan was experiencing tremors before the big one hit.

Could you imagine living in the area of the New Madrid Fault in 1811-1812, three months of 7-7.7 quakes just weeks or days apart.
