    Default Need Kauai info

Wife and I are thinking of doing another hawaii trip in a few months and want to hit Kauai this time as she has never been and I have not been since I was a kid. I seem to recal the north shore being the better place to stay, but it has been a long time for me so I need some direction. Which part of the island is ideal to stay? Any great deals on lodging? I will likely go VRBO and find a 1 bedroom condo to rent; oceanview is a must and ocean front is a big plus. I'm looking for DEALS though....anyone got anything?

We stayed in Poipu and really enjoyed it. Stayed at the Sheraton but wouldn't recommend it, you can do better on your own.

There are strong points to either end of the island, just depends on what you want. We really liked the Hanalei (sp) Bay but didn't care for the big resorts near by.

We enjoy Poipu, at the south end. Quieter, and since we don't golf, no issues with getting to the big resort areas.

We get a condo at the Lawai Beach Resort, it is right across the street from the best snorkeling on the island. Since that's what we do, it is great for us.

Check redweek.com for timeshare condo deals, we often get whole weeks for what others pay for one night. One year we stayed at London Bridge Resort over Memorial Day for $375 for the week. That's what the rooms went for by the night if you did the hotel rates at the same resort.

Hate to be the one that might rain on your Parade. Spent a week there in a timeshare (love my timeshare use) and being Hawaii, a lot of places do not have AC, as this place did not.

It was a warm week, all windows open fans going - but those &%^&#!(& chickens, rosters what ever the hell you want to call them... they do not know what time to crow at.. all day all night - out side our window was their favorite place.

we tried to eat outside twice at nice places, those pesty birds were a PIA and we had to go inside to eat. We saw them at the beach and the top of the canyon. we will not go back to that Island until they get that under control . . . google it !

With that said, it is a BEAUTIFUL ISLAND, I golfed Princeville twice, and I loved it - almost hit the chickens on many holes.

Take the drive to the top of the canyon - on a great day it is a great view - take the scenic drives - awesome. At the far west end of the Island is a place called The Waimea Brewing Company Known as the world's westernmost brewpub, over rated, but hey, you can not going any farther West to get a beer ;-)

Have a safe fun trip and bring ear plugs - unless you have AC and close the windows!

We always stay up in Princeville as it's quite a lot less traveled. I always thought it was very quiet. Hanalie Bay is really cool. Not a lot of surf, but it is a nice quiet beach.
If you're looking for touristy, it probably not going to be the place to go.
Gaylord's has the best luau on the island but book as soon as you get there. I'm not one for touristy outings, but the island movie tour is pretty cool.

Oh and x2 on the earplugs if you like to sleep in. There's a lot of roosters wandering around and start crowing early!!!

My inlaws live there about half the year in Wainiha, just south of Hanalei Bay.

Northshore is the wet, tropical side of the island and home to the wettest place in the world.

Princeville is really, really nice, but spendy, not sure if you'll find any deal there.

Ke'e beach at the end of the road for sunsets; Anini beach for snorkeling, Secret Beach is the type of beach where you let it all hang out.

A trip to Waimea Canyon is fun and takes all day, but seeing Pine Trees and trout fishing on a rock in the Pacific is pretty amazing.

We've been all over the Island many times and the Northshore is where it's at.

As you get closer to your trip I'll shoot you a list of cool stuff and eats.

The Hanalei Valley/Taro fields. A small lookout directly across from Princevill before you drop down into Hanalei.

It's hard to see beacuase of the low clouds, the Napali Coast from the top of Waimea Canyon. When the clouds break it's an amazing view.

Thanks for all the info guys; one major thing i forgot to look into first: airfare. Good lord, it's about $900 a person right now to fly there. Anyone got an inside deal on a flight?

Been about 5 times. We stay at Kiahuna Plantation. Cottage style, open lawns right to the beach vs concrete rooms and pools, real laid back no a/c. Big gas grills to cook your Ono on right by the beach. Right on Poipu, named one the of the best 10 beaches in the US. You have to pick the right room if you go, the ones on the lawn with just grass between you and the waves are the best.

If you want natural Hawaii like it used to be this is it. If you want a bunch of dweebs on their blackberries around a big pool then hit up one of the bigger hotels.

just got back home today. 3rd time on kuai. stayed at outrigger waipoli(spell)? in kaapa centrally located. all 2 bedroom kitchen condo styles high end furnishings pretty quiet laid back great pool area beach out front. they have garden(pool) view partial ocean and ocean front. dont get mountain view, you see the mountain and the safeway parking lot. didnt have any chickens on property. has a/c. i think the best island for nothing over 4 stories small towns laid back.
