Could you explaine how it is preferential to anyone please,If the top 5% pay 65% of all federal taxes? If you want tax those that don't pay thier fair share, maybe we should be looking at the 30% of the middle class that pay's zero taxes due to too many tax loopoles.
If you voted for Obama to prove you were not racist, then you better find someone else to vote for to prove your not stupid.

The reason that politicians don't want a flat tax is because they use it for favors for certain individuals and groups. One example is that there is a tax break for anyone raising sheep or goats above a certain elevation. How many ranchers does it affect? just one. It happens to be a friend of a democratic Colorado congressman that enacted the tax code. There are thousands just like it. If you cut all the tax breaks like that, you'd have a better tax code. Cut all deductions on the personal level, drop the rate to 8.5% and 13% on the upper end and cut the business tax to 18% with the only write-off being depreciation of equipment bought, assembled, and manufactured in the US and you'd see a fairer code. Unfortunately some of our representatives friends may have to pay more. Like Nancy Pelosi's husband who enjoys certain tax breaks for a business in American Samoa that is able to skirt a lot of tax laws as well as minimum wages laws (Nancy made sure that she exempted only American Samoa from them).

Rod, nobody is saying that this country hasn't been spending more than we take in from time to time. Please take a close look at the chart and you'll see that prior to the 110th democratically-controlled congress taking their seats in January of 2007 the amount being spent was not much more than we were taking in. Keep in mind that the recession had already hit and we already were paying for two wars then as well.

Now take a close look at the disparity between dollars in and the amount being spent today and please explain how spending (spelled correctly) is not the problem facing America today.

Lastly, I'll show you another tidbit you should really enjoy. Your hero has proposed huge tax hikes but were you aware that less than one quarter of the new taxes raised will go to deficit reduction? 3/4 of will pay for more "New Spending" as if this clown won the lottery. He's easily the most fiscally irresponsible president our nation has ever had and you seem to be fine with it all and approved with your vote. This is nothing more than a continuation of his last term of American destruction.

    Better yet Rod,
Please show me just 50 of the current federal offices/agencies that I can't live without as a productive citizen of the USA. There are well over 1000 to sort through in your efforts. I've looked and I simply can't find more than a couple dozen that are of vital necessity to our nation's productive citizens. I dare you to produce just 50 that are. That's only 5% you know . . .
