"I remember when I used to get school lunches, sometimes they didn't taste so good, I've got to admit," Obama said. "We are actually seeing if we can work to at least make school lunches healthier. Because a lot of school lunches, there's a lot of french fries, pizzas, tater tots. All kinds of stuff that isn't a well-balanced meal."

Weaver, son of a single mom, lives in the town of Pahokee, which is about 77 miles northwest of Miami and plagued with crime and poverty. He attends Kathryn E. Cunningham/Canal Point Elementary and is the lead broadcaster for their in-house KEC TV station.

"Unfortunately, a lot of times if you've got a community that is lower income, they don't have as much money in their schools," Obama told Weaver. "A lot of that is state funding. And I want to see states be more fair in terms of how they give money to various schools around their communities. But, I do think that it's important to make sure that we can find help from the federal government from here in Washington, D.C., for those schools that need the most help."

When I graduated from high school I got a night custodian job. (four hours per night). I went to Orange Coast College three days a week and painted houses two days week with my dad.

This was 1966. Buy 1973 I owed 14,000 on my $30,000 house, paid for my masters at Pepperdine. I had been married 4 years and workrd seven. My wife and I had our first of three children.

Unfortunately the government does give to these communites that he is talking about in turn only to have it destroyed. Housing is a great example of that. It was frustrating in Philly and Chester to see them come in and build brand new nice affordable hud housing to see it destoryed within months. Grafiti, broken windows etc...etc....

You have to have respect first and the government can't buy that.

Interesting, I just did a quick google search and look what I found..... I am sure this is to replace the already not so old housing that has been destroyed by those living in it.

Donovan awards $95 million to jump-start affordable housing construction in Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA, PA - July 28, 2009 - (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan today awarded $95 million to jump start affordable housing programs in Pennsylvania that are currently stalled due to the current economic recession. Funded through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act), HUD’s new Tax Credit Assistance Program (TCAP) will allow Pennsylvania to resume funding of affordable rental housing projects across the state while stimulating employment in the construction trades.
“The intended purpose of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is to jumpstart the nation’s ailing economy, with a primary focus on creating and saving jobs in the near term,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. “The funding being awarded today is an important step in achieving the goal of putting American people back to work while at the same time providing quality, affordable housing options for low-income families at a time when it is needed more than ever.”
The current economic and financial crises present significant challenges for the construction industry, particularly residential construction. One of the by-products of this crisis has been the freezing of investments in the LIHTC market. Tax credits provide an incentive for investors to provide capital to developers to build multi-family rental housing for moderate- and low-income families across the nation. Since the contraction of the credit market, and as traditional investors remain on the sidelines, the value of tax credits has plummeted. Consequently, as many as 1,000 projects (containing nearly 150,000 units of housing) are on hold across the country.
In response, the Recovery Act provides $2.25 billion for TCAP, a grant program to provide capital investments in these stalled Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) projects. HUD is awarding these TCAP grants by formula to state housing credit agencies to complete construction of qualified housing projects that will ultimately provide affordable housing to an estimated 35,000 households nationwide. Since a major purpose of this program is job creation, the Recovery Act establishes ambitious deadlines for expenditure of grant funds and requires state housing credit agencies to give priority to projects that can begin immediately and be completed by February 16, 2012.
For more details regarding specific projects funded through this grant, contact the Pennsylvania State Housing Finance Agency.
    ###
HUD is the nation’s housing agency committed to sustaining homeownership; creating affordable housing opportunities for low-income Americans; and supporting the homeless, elderly, people with disabilities and people living with AIDS. The Department also promotes economic and community development and enforces the nation’s fair housing laws. More information about HUD and its programs is available on the Internet at www.hud.gov and espanol.hud.gov.

Here is another. I can tell you first hand that Chester used to be a nice place back in the early 1900's. I can also tell you that from the 70's on that it went down hill fast and that many a housing projects have been built and destroyed in that time frame. If the government didnt keep throwing money in this area it too would be an urban prairie....but how long can you keep on doing it. This area has been completely built for years. It isnt a bunch of vacant land that is being developed.

You shouldn't. Help and compassion go to those trying to help themselves, not those looking for another hand out. Life's not equal or fair so you have to make the best of what you have.

America is the land of equal opportunity, not equal success.

Kudos to you and where your hard work has gotten you! Nowdays people want what you have EARNED and think that they are entitled...

Hard work (custodian, picking up trash, digging ditches, doing oil changes, scraping up dead animals off the highway OR whatever) is something that many young folks will never be able to understand... I think we (Americans) SHOULD pick our own cabbage / lettuce / grapes / tomatoes, cut our own grass, tear off/replace our own roof, scrape and RE paint our own houses...

Ms Understood, I have watched for the last 25 years how the St Louis City school board and politicians have RAPED the schools, turned them into a nightmare and now they are run by the state... As for the housing complexes like Pruidigo, Capreney Green (of Chicago) and Im sure many many others... Give them FIVE YEARS and they wont be fit to walk through after dark...

IF they dont EARN it, they more than likely wont appreciate it OR take care of it...

2MM, not only do they not earn it, they are not held accountable. Instead the government pays to refurbish or level and rebuild it again.....That is what is most frustrating. We keep paying for this stuff over and over....if they dont appreciate it in these same areas then put that money to better use or better yet lower our taxes...

BTW 5 years is generous imho, I have seen first hand that it takes less than that to destroy......

If they (politicians) don't BILK the taxpayers out of $$$ millions $$$ for rehab on the projects HOW can the politicians skim off AND padd their coffers??? After the rehab the politicians can say "wow, look what I did... I got it all cleaned up"...

Years ago I worked construction jobs in the summer. It was tough getting the damned projects built before they started in on the destruction.

We had a project where they were adding a third set of buildings. You'd think they'd be excited to get something nice and new but apparently is more fun to see how much they could tear up. No thoughts for the extra cost to do things several times, extra materials, and "attempts" at security to try and stop at least slow the vandalism.

Now it's even worse as they steal the wiring and copper plumbing.

I used to periodically drive by my Grandparents 1820 ish two story that was DOWNTOWN St. Louis and it was gone except for a pile of rubble. I went next door to ask the neighboring packing house what happened and they said "the brick bandits stold the house"... I was like HUH???

They said that the Brick Bandits come in and start at the top, popping loose and throwing down the bricks... They skid them up, load them up and away they go...

I guess after the Copper is gone, the fixtures are gone and there is nothing left of value they steal the whole house!!! St Louis city is covered with places like this...

You got me....I have not been around nearly that long.

Let me rephrase. I can tell you that back in the early 1900's it was a nice place all the way up to say 1970 by family photos and history. However from that point on it went down hill. Growing up on the neighboring cities and with family that still lived in Chester, I saw first had the destruction of new housing....or in other words the projects. These same areas destroyed only to be refurbished again. In addition to the living conditions tho there would be New cadilacs parked out front....go figure.
