    Fat chance.

P.S. It only extended the life of slavery. It failed to resolve the issue of the expansion of slavery. When the debates that led to the Missouri Compromise started, support for slavery, was very low (even in the south). In short, this was the time when America had it's best shot at peacefully and successfully ending slavery and Congress blew it.
Most interesting. The floor is open to other nominations for the worst law ever passed.
Btw, ES, is there some online poll somewhere where history professors vote on this?

If this is your way of saying that this is a topic for another thred, then I would say that you are correct.

P.S. My other vote for worst U.S. Law ever would be for the passage and ratification of the 16th amendment, but that might not meet some folks definition of legislation..
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

It was my way of suggesting that I'm talking to a history professor. Also I found it interesting that you had a ready answer, I've never thought this thru.

    An excellent choice.

but that might not meet some folks definition of legislation..
Why split hairs? It's as ugly as any other sausage.

Nice try . But read the OP and you will find IT IS what this thread is about. And given the chance O would have pushed for a single payer system if he could have gotten the votes. And if you don't think O settled for this knowing it was the first step towards a single payer system you are as delusional as a retard.
