Two weeks after winning the OPA Miss Geico series opener in Ocean City, Maryland, Team AMSOIL Offshore traveled to hot and sunny Sunny Isles Beach, Florida for the 3rd Annual running of the Miami to Bimini Ocean Race and 2nd Race in the OPA Miss Geico Series.
Team AMSOIL #77 has been dominant each year in the Miami to Bimini Record Run. Team AMSOIL is currently the record holder in the Cat Lite Class for the run. After establishing the endurance speed record in 2008, Team AMSOIL returned and set a blistering pace in 2009 in calmer than normal Gulf Stream waters. This year, the conditions were the roughest of the three years. The seas in the middle 40 miles of each leg of the endurance run were confused and boasted waves of 4 to 5 feet. In spite of the rough conditions, Paul Whittier and Bob Teague piloted the Team AMSOIL Skater with flawless navigation completing the 106-mile open ocean run in a total time of 1:8.55 for an average speed of 92.28 MPH.
Again, Team AMSOIL dominated the Cat Lite Class in the Miami to Bimini run. Team AMSOIL (92.28 MPH average) finished approximately 9 minutes ahead of the 2nd place Cat Lite Team Infinity Skater (82 MPH average), and 15 minutes ahead of the 3rd place Team Black Dog MTI entry (75.85 MPH average). Team AMSOIL was 5th overall. The first four boats consisted of two large turbine powered catamarans, and two large supercharged catamarans. Team AMSOIL with stock Mercury Racing 525 EFI engines was only about 2 minutes behind the much higher powered MTI “Mercedes” entry.
Due to a change in wind direction and intensity, the conditions for the Sunday OPA Sunny Isles Beach Offshore Challenge Race were equally as demanding. The Cat Lite Class was part of the main event held on the 6.2-mile, rectangular course with 2 ¾-mile straight-a-ways up and down the crowded Sunny Isles Beach and beach front hotels. When the green flag dropped, Team AMSOIL jumped to the lead and never looked back winning the 2nd OPA Miss Geico Series Race in a row.
Team AMSOIL and Teague Custom Marine are founding members of the Platinum Powerboat Club. The Platinum Powerboat Club’s main function is to develop and fund events that benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Platinum Powerboat Club orchestrates the “Puttin on the Wish” events at various boat races and poker runs around the country. At Sunny Isles Beach, Team AMSOIL and Bob Teague participated in the “Puttin on the Wish” event which granted a wish to 172 kids for rides in performance offshore boats. The event was held in conjunction with the South Florida chapter of Make-a-Wish.
During the weekend’s festivities, Miss Offshore was crowned after participating in a competition with 33 finalists. Miss Offshore 2010, Mieka Bostedor, as part of her duties, becomes an honorary member of Team AMSOIL Offshore Racing and will accompany the team to the next race in Sarasota, Florida over the Independence Day weekend.
