Orange Beach, Alabama became the final stop for the OPA 2010 racing series. This event was on the original season schedule and was then cancelled due to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Once the oil spill was stopped, the state of Alabama, along with the beach cities of GulfShores and OrangeBeach came together to re-instate the event as a means to boost the regional economy. In addition to the OPA World Championships races which provided racing on Friday and Sunday, two major concerts were held on the beach featuring Bon Jovi and Brad Paisley. The combination of the Thunder on the Gulf Championships and the concerts drew huge crowds of spectators and fans.

AMSOIL was one of the presenting sponsors of this year’s Thunder on the Gulf event, so all of the race pits and surrounding spectator areas were decorated with official AMSOIL banners. AMSOIL decals were provided for each race boat in attendance and were required to be displayed and AMSOIL hats were provided for the crew of each team.

Testing conditions on Thursday were uncharacteristically smooth for OrangeBeach. The Team AMSOIL crew established a good set up for Friday’s race. On Friday, the conditions were rougher. Even though the team AMSOIL Skater was over-propped, Bob Teague and Paul Whittier were able to find decent speed and lead the race from start to finish.

Saturday testing revealed extremely rough conditions with a wind change. After a first test session, Team AMSOIL pulled the boat and returned to the pits to change to a lower outdrive gear ratio in anticipation of continued rougher conditions. Checking the weather indicated that the conditions were going to be the same on Sunday.
Proving that weather forecasters can always be wrong and still keep their job, the rough conditions did not materialize for Sunday. In fact, the conditions became calmer as the day continued. Just before race time, Team AMSOIL made as many adjustments to the calm conditions as possible with the boat already in the water at the wet pits. This included going up in prop pitch and adjusting the ballast weight bags.

The adjustments proved to work well resulting in a quick race boat with as much speed as possible with the engines running on the 5400 RPM rev-limiters. Team AMSOIL was able to accelerate to the lead when the green flag dropped and maintained an increasing lead for the entire 60-mile heat.
Winning both 60-mile heats of racing, Team AMSOIL was named OPA Cat Lite World Champion with Team Infinity from Norway in second place.
