I'm toying with the idea of a 77 18' V bottom Southwind as my next "quick" project. I am trying to figure out what it takes to make one run in the mid 70's for power and setup. It has a basicly stock 454 with headers, berkley 12jc pump, berkey jetovater and full length stringers (beefed up replacements, not the original short ones). The boat is super clean and is almost ready to put back in the water.

The previous owner removed the 460, replaced the stringers with full length and had some fire breathing 871 496 BBC in it, but never put a GPS to it and only ran it a few times till a $$$ crunch hit and the motor got sold.

My question is, what should I expect to see with a stockish 454, and what will it take to get to the mid 70's. I'll post some pics tonight when I pick it up.

Thanks!

my '73 v-bottom southwind has a mildly built 454 bbc with berkeley pump with diverter and droop; and goes an honest 55mph. the motor was built back in march, "a" cut impeller and the pump runs fine.

My 18-ft S/W has passenger car iron block and heads 0.030" overbored 460 ford, tiny hydraulic lifter cam, etc, and it exceeds 85 mph. Now that the 460 has been pulled from your boat and replaced with a chebby, you should have no trouble whatsover slowing it down to the high 60's low 70's.

smallscalepilot,

On a more serious note, I'd say that 450+ hp and good hull setup will get you into the 70's.

i blame it on the pump. :D

i have an honest 400-450hp, but who knows since the pump has been rebuilt. it runs good, so ill worry about the pump next year.

i currently have about 8:1 compression, but thinking of changing out the pistons and a few other parts. my set-up with heads, intake, cam, rockers, rods and cast crank will hold up to better pistons. with a few changes it should go up to about 10:1. do you think the speed would bump up a few mph?

The funny thing is, the 460 that came out of it went into a Centurion Pickelfork I had. I bolted a M&W twin turbo kit on it and was turning a A impeller @5K and could only go 65 per GPS! I have to say the Ford is a TANK and damn near indestructible.

The boat is in the driveway now and I've done my quick inspection and well....we don't need to worry about this issue...I just yanked the valve cover and found crusty rust spots here and there, some leftover milkshake, and the piston tops have a lot of pitting.

This is a buddy deal boat that has been sitting for 3 years, and was passed around a group of friends, so I'm not married to it and $0 invested.

Thanks for the insight and laughs!

My 75 southwind hit 78(with my fat ass) with a approx 500 hp 460 BBF. Now when some skinny guy stole my boat at the CBBB it was running with Lakesonly's boat.

I had a little bit of pump work. MPD "B" imp with some bowl work and diverter. Loader. No rideplate, shoe, or droop.

I miss that boat! Wait, let me look at my sig, nope. I am fine. :)devil

Lakes, do southwinds like holley fuel pumps?:)hand

I have a vbottom kachina ( similar to southwind)

BBF 9.5to 1 berkeley with an A. Shoe ride plate diverter etc.

Spins 5k and went an honest 75.6 on gps. Motor is probally 425. Added a 125 shot this year and havent got a number on the bottle.

Im a firm believer in it isnt always about horsepower as it is set up.

18' Brendella which is the full stringered spittin image of the Southwind as near as I can tell.
With a week 468 and a loose pump (Panther to boot) I ran high 60s at 5900 (I told you it was loose).

New setup has yet to be gps'd
