4cyl OMC 400 "Stringer" Outdrive
When I bought the boat a year ago the guy told me that it would pop out of forward gear occasionally, at around 3000 rpm.
I had an issue with the starter, it sounded like the flywheel was missing teeth, zzziiing. Pulled the engine off the drive and inspected the flywheel... no issue there. Turns out one of the starter bolts had broken, keeping the gears from fully engaging. After fixing the issue with the starter and bolting the engine back up... reverse gear wont engage. Forward works fine.
I've tried disconnecting the shift cable from the shift plate mounted on the engine and moved in into gear by hand. Still nothing, except a very faint sound of the shift dogs barely touching.
Did I mess something up when I backed the engine off the drive? Lower shift cable?
It worked just fine before. Where should I start in identifying the issue?
Thanks guys!
