I'm thinking about buying this boat. As the story goes, the guy selling it bought it from a widow that has had the boat in storage up untill 2 years ago. Boat comes with carb'd 454 and is apparently pretty clean by the pictures. Assuming everything checks out on the boat, and it's as clean as it is in the pictures, what would it be worth? Also , if anyone has any experience with this exact model - please give me your input!

oh and this is my first post of many to come! Hello! I'm Jeff!

The boat is built like a tank, but not really as fast as it looks. Mad porpoising problems at 50; my neighbor added Dana tabs, different prop and although it helped, the tabs slowed him down further. His wife got tired of getting beat by the bad ride and porpoise and made him sell it.

If you are looking for something to get you to 55+, move on.

I think $14K is way high. My neighbor's was also a 96 and he sold it for $8K a couple of years back.

Plenty of comparable boats around, good luck with it either way. I always liked the look of that boat.

and Welcome :)

Thanks for all the comments! This guy is asking $12,000 and I was hoping to either get it for $10k cash or my motorcycle and cash on top. You don't think it'd do over 55mph though? I plan on putting a cam and carb on it probably with in the first week (i like thumpity motors)

x2

I had one and it was fast with a 400sbc /alpha ss/ nose cone/ sbc put out 450 on dyno. ran 71 on gps. I'd not buy another unless it was 26 or bigger.

I'd buy papag Hallett before that scarab.

worth <10k IMO
Where's this Hallet? And is it in Texas? lol

Seems like there is your answer and list of concerns.

I think $12K is reasonable for a good to great condition boat of this year and size.
You're just saying that because it has checkers.:D

My neighbor had the 454, not the 454 mag, I think his did about 60-65 - he would never push it due to the handling issues.

Find out of it's a mag motor before you switch the cam. IMO, you wouldn't really see much difference for the effort and expense. I did the same on a 454 mag motor - being advised by the guy who wrote the 'big block" bible and I flattened a cam lobe.

I could never understnd the Alpha drives - kind of a heavy boat for that little drive.

I owned one of these in 96, it was a 1995 model and my first boat. Small block/ Alpha set up. Boat was fun to drive and ran in the 60's with no handling issues that I remember. I did run the ocean with it all the time and Havasu twice. Fun boat. Far from built like a tank. They had to pull the floor out of it because they put a seem in the floor where there was no stringer. So the passanger seat floor area broke. It also cracked just in front of the windscreen on both sides, over the bulkhead there at your feet. There were a couple of boat that cracked like that. They did repair it. They made the bulkhead to tight so I was told, I was told the boat couldn't flex and it cracked it. That was the builders story. A super fun boat though. I think it would make a fun and easy to drive lake boat. Again this was a long time ago and my first, some of the posters may have more recent seat time and remember things about the boat I have forgot'n. Welcome to the boards!

Thanks for everyones input! I went and looked at the boat and it seriously looks like it was in a time capsul for 11 years. I honestly believe the story about it being in storage for that long and never being ran untill 2 years ago. He fired it up quickly and it IMMEDIATLY started without any hesitation. These are from my iphone, but you could seriously eat off this motor. Comes with trailer, cockpit cover and full cover. Stereo sounded good too!

FWIW, this one has the 454HO, which is the highest hp 454 for that year (from what i'm seeing) and this one has bravo 1 drive on it.
