Hey all. New to the site (but had a hotboat account) and hoping to get some advice on my boat.

I have a 98 Nordic sprint with a 454/ bravo 1 combo. I'm having a cooling issue. I changed the Impeller and put in all new autometer guages last summer. Used the boat 1 time. It is running just under 210. Never hotter. but I know that is way too hot. I just back flushed the cooler that is behind the Power steering pump, and just pulled the thermostat out. I boiled the thermostat and it started to open at 160 but was all the way opened at 190. Is that too long?

I'm also wondering if the guage is giving me the wrong reading. The new guages are Autometer but the sending unit is the original from Nordic. Could they read different?

Thanks for all the help. I'm just trying to cover everything before I put it back together.

If you are sure there are no parts of the impeller are out, I'd put in a new thermostat. Go with the Merc 140 set up. It will start to open at 140, and be completely open at 160. Boats should not run more than 180, so 210 is way too hot. When you backflushed the system, did you get goo flow all the way out to the drive?

Yes- the sending unit must match (the ohms range) of the gauge. Odds are, they don't match.

Sweet, I'm going to change That today. I just flushed out the drive, everything is clean. So it"s between the t-stat and the sending unit.

What about the water pump? The weep hole is not leaking so I am assuming it's fine

Your right, if it isn't leaking, don't worry about it. BTW, in my experiance, T-stats seem to last about 10 years or so before they start going tits up. If ya go with that 140, the boat should run consistantly around 160 degrees or so.

EFI engines use a 160 thermostat and the engine should run 160 to 165. They are very consistant when all things in the cooling system are operating properly. Make sure you use a Mercruiser thermostat, they are stainless and have a higher flow rating.
As HH said you have to have the correct sender for your gauge.

X2 even if your engine is the 1997 carb engine the right thermostat to use is still Part # 807252t2 and that should be the 160 degress from merc. Are you testing all these temps with a infrared temp reading gun? And is it over heating at idle or at speeds? And is your warnning horn going off?:)
