Are they trying to sell them for that, or is that bidding price to get someone to haul it away? That was the worse thing GM and Merc ever pulled on the boating industry. And I blame GM more than Merc. Hell, who knows, maybe Merc got the same snow job GM dumped on everybody. But that motor should have come with a warning label.

Im not impressed with that motor at all his boat runs ok at about 74mph but sitting there at idle the damn thing shakes like hell like they didnt balance it or something they could have put a better motor in them for what you pay for a boat like that he told me he paid 70k for it. It also sounds like crap

and you would blow a gut when you see what merc charges for a CMI(merc spec/ie;cheaply made) header! like $5000.00 per side! but of course no one on this
site would be stupid enough to buy engine parts for their motor from merc! pricing is a
joke!:))ThumbsDwn

I guess the jerking around could come from a aggressive cam profile but i dont think they put anything special in these motors did they. I have seen some people just throwing whipple blowers on them and that just dont sound like a good idea i bet they have cast junk pistons in them and that just sounds like something bad waiting to happen. I looked at a set of heads the other day and the intake ports look like crap kinda like one of those LS junk motors is that the new big thing puting heads on motors that are called performance engines that cant flow shit

The very first 425 hp had forged crank and pistons. GM dropped that right away when they and Merc decided they were never going to get into ramping them up. The only diff between the later ones was a camshaft and a different mapping in the ECM Biggest issue with a blower on them is the damper has no key in it. It just pressed on and bolted. Whipple made a device to put on the snout and run a drill down the snout, creating a half round key slot and using a dowel in a matching machined damper hub. Better than nothing. But they didn't recomend more than 5lbs of boost on the motor, and the original damper set up seemed to handle that OK. As for the heads, Raylar heads have a near perfect finish on them, but I just don't know if the motor and available aftermarket justifies them. Its just to bad that the thing got dropped before it had a chance. I think it didn't help that the size was a little bit of disappointment, and you could duplicate the size, and thru a shorter stroke, with a junk yard BBC and it would perform better.

He should be able to sel it though. Lots of people thinking of repowering instead of a new boat, and there are few that may upgrade from a ill advised SBC when originally purchasing.

The 496 motor w/ exhaust mods gave 50 more hp

The good part, of this package is 6 years of factory and extended warranty

Even going with Bravo XR drive you will kill them over time

A pair will push a 28 daytona 105mph

seems like the XR drives these days don't last as long as a stock bravo, due to the
crappy quality gears in the uppers--just don't last with any power! been reading up on
this on OSS- AND talked to Brian @ B&D Marine about it......

Its not the shape of the port I dislike. Its the fact that stock don't work. Ask Raylar? Ask Raylar? Their smallest kit includes new heads. What does that tell you. If the stock heads are that good, they would leave them. The motor is behind the eight ball upgrade wise. If the heads worked so well, they could support most of, if not all of the available upgrades for the thing. They can't. They make those heads, because it needs heads, badly. After exhaust, you better get to the heads, because for any other improvements youn are going to need tham except possibly a Whipple set for 5lbs.
N/A750 hp home build 496 MKIVs are as common as dirt. Don't even think trying to get there with a 8.1 for any where near the same money.
The only reason I smack talk the cathedral heads on the LS is because everybody points to flow of the LS7 and 9s and says wow. And then turns around and builds a LS1 OR 3 as if its the same engine. And its not even close.
It would be like comparing a 8.1 to a Gen6 502. Not hardly, and nobody is that stupid.

660hp Pump gas 496 with a single 850 and only spinning it to 6k rpm.
And for about the same price as these used 8.1's are going for. :D:D

OK, can't say I have ever owned one, or even try to get more performance out of one!
all I know is the ports are kinda like an ls, and I guess I was speculating, cuz the ls heads
DO work well. I do know that the 8.1l in a 1 ton, flat hauls ass tho! and sucks the fuel
accordingly- I have driven them in that aspect, and they run pretty good(in a truck)

I've been in a few boats with the 496 HO motor. Seems to run well. They sound like they have a lot of camshaft in them the way they idle. I just can't believe the money they cost new. Just seems ridiculous.
