just got a new msd ready to run distributor, installed it, fired right up. My question is what do i set the timing at. stock motor, holly d'pumper carb in a daycruiser. I ask the guy at the parts house because he seem pretty knowlegeable about fords, and he replied that since it was for a boat he would not have a clue. i do know that the motor is left hand rotation since shopping for a new distributor, does that mean the motor is really running backwards from normal rotation. also am betting that my motor is tired and will need rebuilt or replaced soon, so do i have to replace it with a marine 460 or just any run of the mill 460? i know that these are probably dumb questions, but i gotta ask. any help would be appreciated.

my bbf's never liked much timing, i gave the stockers about 32-33, and the last 11 to 1 i built for myself liked 31-32. herd others get away with more, its just what my plugs and motors seemed to like.

No dumb questions ! , Welcome to the PB boards (and the ensuing craziness ! assuming it is stock (compression) and your at sea level my OP 34* to 36* total, all in at around 2500 rpm :D

Iron on iron and basicaly stock Ford 460. jetboatperformance Has very good advice. For shits and giggles rebuild the motor you have. Marine motors for the most part are called marine motors because of the add ons and gaskets used. M

That and the 40% mark-up thing. :D

Add On. If you can't set total advance try a starter setting at 6-8 degrees and see how it runs. Just watch out for detonation,(pinging) Fords will detonate them selves to death. Back in the old days we would lean on the timing till we got a ping and back off from there. But that was all pre-techno. M

You get Marine head gaskets, marine camshaft, brass Welsch plugs, and no waranty and they cost 40-60% more....it needed head gaskets anyways, it needed Welsch plugs anyway, it needed a camshaft anyway, why does it cost more?

That has always blown me away...:|err

I was in the biz for a long time and it never stopped blowing my mind how much "marine" parts sell for...

Blows me away to! Here is one for you. I have been in and out of marine bussinesses and got the same response as a justification. We need to cover salt water use. and my favorite "spark arrest". On an open engine application? M

I'm pretty sure it has to do with liability issues and the cost of getting a Coastguard approval on a part. (if you're talking about actual marine approved parts) Just because someone calls something a "marine" part, doesen't automatically make it one.

If you meant to say that you think your 460 is a "reverse-rotation" engine, then I seriously doubt it and I'll bet that it is a standard-rotation engine just like the 429/460 passenger car engines. I am basing this on the fact that your 460 is installed in a CVX23...also, it seems that you are referring to "left-hand" rotation because you just intalled a distributor, which you seem to have observed turns counter-clockwise (left-hand). Standard-roatation 460 distrbutors indeed turn counter-clockwise.

To be certain: when viewed from the front of the engine, your cranksahft snout (pulleys, etc) should turn clockwise while the engine is running. If this is the case, then you have the standard-rotation 460 engine.

Whether it is a Marine 460 is a moot point relative to your original inquiry about ignition timing.

In regards to timing and assuming a common 460 engine with D3VE heads, etc, set your ignition timing at about 30-32 degrees BTDC @ 3000 rpm. This is a very good starting point, and it may be possible to advance ignition timing furhter but without knowing fuel quality, spark plug readings, etc, it's kind of hard to suggest further timing over the internet....but if your plug readins show a lean condition at this timing setting, then jet up the carb.

For the MSD Ready To Run dizzy, you want the red stop bushing and 1 light blue and 1 light silver spring installed in the mechanical advance. These items should have come with the distributor. This will set the mechanical advance up so that it will add in a total of 25* of advance on top of your initial timing advance (advance at idle)and it will all be in by 3000RPMs.

That being said, you'll need a total advance timing light to properly set the timing. Set the dial on the back of the timing light for how much total advance you want to dial in. Then rev the engine until the timing mark stops moving (should be around 3000 RPMs), then turn the distributor until the timing mark on the balancer lines up with the "0" on the timing tab on the timing chain cover. If you set it to 30-32* like Lakes Only recommended for a starting point, this would give you about 5-7* initial advance at idle.
