Anyone have issues with a newer 496?My buddy had his overheat,so he changed the impeller took it out did the same thing, so eddie marine says the housing was bad so new impeller with housing and same thing happens. so 1300 bucks later, now they think its a head gasket issue, motor has 50 hours and is 2 years old.Another problem he bought it from warlock and carter reed so the motor was never registered with merc when sold.So the 3 questions i have is how much to change a set of head gaskets on a 496?Anyone seen carter reed? What are the chances of merc paying for it?

Try calling quality performance marine in corona or a merc only type sevice shop like them, and see if he can register the engine and get it fixed up for you. They MIGHT be able to do that, If any thing it is worth the call. Good luck with it. [951]735-5503. Was the old impeller bad at all?
I think eddie marine was trying to get merc to help but not having much luck so far.The impeller may of been bad the first time but i thought with all the beels and whistles it would keep the motor from hurting itself, don't look to be true. Both times after the impeller change i guess the warning buzzer went off and puked the coolant after driving for 10 minutes but he said the motor never got over 200.Dont seem like enough to blow a gasket....

eddie marine In Rancho Cucamonga, CA is working on your engine and calling merc?

Is it just me or does that price seem high?

Yes. The Brass housing is @ $275. The whole pump with everything is @ $600. Seems to me he got ripped off on that deal. But what do I know.
Start by doing a leak down test on the motor and it will tell you if you have a bad head gasket. There are a lot of different things that will make a motor overheat

I had the same problem, but it was just a matter of getting the pump primed to get the water flowing.

Yea he did it once himself and once by the shop so so i think he said around 12-1300.Forgot to metion only happens above 4000 rpm.

Yea i told him that. he was pretty depressed on vacation for a week with no boat.
Eddie marine worked on it for quite a few hours the second after there first try and lake tested it for a hour and didnt charge him so that was cool of them.
Did he backflush the motor when the impeller went south?

Eddie marine did my buddy didn't because the impeller looked fine.Eddie also took took alot of the cooling system apart from what im told.
There theory is at 5000 rpm a small crack in the head or gasket is allowing pressure in to the closed cooling system which boils the fluid or pressures it out.I guess the problem is they cant get it to do it on the hose and driving the boat in rough conditions at wide open throttle with your head stuck in the hatch wasn't a option.

If he's still having flow problems, there is usually sand (and maybe impeller pieces) in the oil cooler and/or heat exchanger. If the housing went bad, he was probably sucking up sand.

Have him take it to Absolute- I bet Aaron will pull a bunch of crap out of there (Eddie probably doesn't do that stuff).

I'm always amazed at what the river deposits in my blocks.

Yea last motor i blew up was full of sand.....

That is the best part of this job, I love doing that. Is it easy to remove the hatch off the boat? A leak down test should find a bad head/ gasket It should blow air in to the coolent tank and make bubbels.

Yea i was laughing my ass off, as i was kicking it down at the water and seen his boat fly by with the 2 eddie marine guy looking back at the motor. It was saturday afternoon and parker was chopped up pretty good.I told him about my little laugh when i cruised over for bbq he wasnt amused.

taking a leakdown with the problem your friend has is a good idea. Also checking the complete cooling system needs to be done.

Now for the thing most guys can’t do on there own, that is read the on board computer.

The 496, 525, 700, 1050 & 1200 efi engines need special lap top programs to read what has been happening with your engine.

You cant even set timing correctly without the help of a lap top or a high $$$ computer for mercury. Timing might be one possible reasons your engine overheats at top end???

Find someone that will take a computer or a lap top, read what has been going on, what trouble codes you may have and find when the proplem started. There is so much information stored in the ecu. One can’t tell stories about how they were only going 3000 rpm when the problem started or never had that problem before!!!

The 496 ecu has memory that will show you how long your engine has run in every 1000 rpm range. Even if you have had an over speed condition with the engine rpm.

The days of the buddy helping with your boat are going away quickly.
