I think they have the same short block, are the heads the same,
same compression?

I know that they are 40 hp more

385 vs 425, but how is made?

cam and programing, as stated earlier, the first HO's had forged crank and pistons, now the entire assembly is the same except the cam, and there are some programing changes due to the cam
Yup, this got hashed out a year or so ago. Camshaft and ECM programming. EVERYTHING else is the same.

so if you raylar a 496 mag, you get more hp per buck?

they end up the same in the end right?

Unless they have changed it recently it's 375 vs 425 (50hp)

I believe the difference is in the cams and the ECM programing, as stated above.

just looked at the merc marine site,
the new ones are 420 vs 370

and they say wot rpms is only 4200/4600

Thats the rating on their Inboards, not their I/O. I/O's are still 425 and 375. 5000 for the 425 and 4800 for th e375
5150 for 425.
