Do a search on here for 496 HO and start reading. This has been asked SEVERAL times and lots of the info you are looking for is already here.

You can get plent of power out of your current motor without the extra cost of re-rigging the boat. A few have done was is suggested above and only gained 5mph - if that - for their trouble.

There is alot of good attributes to the Gen-VII motor. It's just different enough from a Gen-VI to scare some peeps around here.

Replicated cathedral intake ports.
Better cooling.
NO DISTRIBUTOR.

There is plenty of good exhaust systems, which is where you should start. It will already be a gain and makes the motor ready for any further upgrades. You can't get more air IN if you can't get it OUT.

Whipple can re-program your ECM for better mixture, timing, and power increase.

I bought an extra set of heads to do bigger valves, since people will sell these parts pretty cheap. It's nice to have spares.

2) do the whipple ecm upgrade
3) get some more air into the motor compartment
4) try a labbed prop
I installed extra vents into the Warlock got some more COOL air into the more ..it picked up.....I did everything except the exhaust ( removed the "turbonators" off the exhaust) ....

We put the same motor into the Eliminator and it ran good..lifted the hatch about 2 inches on the motor picked up RPM's ....We tried this on Exteme1's Laveycraft and it picked up some RPMS also...

I was going to mention the TURBULATORS, but forgot. Thanks for bringing that up. That was a "feelable" change in mine. Sound also. It has been dyno'd at 7hp difference, but it sure feels like more. Taking a 2.5" restrictor (turbulator) out of a 3.75" hole definitely helps flow.

Of course there's always the Raylar kit you could put on, but it's not going to be the least expensive option.

I have 04 katchina with a 496 ho. After looking into what it wold take to make it go fast i found out nothing. The 496 ho is a great motor the way its is. Not a good motor to build up, so if you want go fast change motor. Or do what i did, I bought a runner bottom that goes well over 100mph.

Yes....however, you should run the 3.5 boost setting and NOT the 5. The cast pistons in our engines are thin at the top near the ring-land. ANY detonation will tear chunks off and start to implode the motor. Has been done several times.

I know of TWO that are currently running fine after 200 hrs of having Whipple on top. These guys have EVERY gauge possible and are watching everthing carefully.

You don't strike me as having been around performance motors much, so I would suggest you steer clear of superchargers. While these motors aren't terrible, they just aren't good candidates for super/turbo charging - unless specifically (re)built for it.

The 496HO is a great engine the way it is. they are not designed to do any modifications to it, altho you can. For the money you will spend on trying to get a few more MPH its not worth the $. A super charger is a for sure gernade. be careful on what you do.

496 more power? NO

The 496 HO engine from Mercruiser is only built for the serial 425 HP.
When you go to the 500HP range the internal rotating assembly is not strong enough....

My friend has an Paul Pfaff 496 with 650HP on the dyno testet.
They modyfided

Pistion to JE Forged custom made pistons
Rods to forged custom Rods 6.700
Heads to Raylar heads with new valves and stronger springs
Head gasket to cometic
CMI E Top Headers
Modify MEFI4
Aeromotiv fuel pump

etc................
