Hey guys, i was wondering if this superjet hull i have has any potential for being a fast lake hot rod. My old boat is a 74 kona that does an honest 89 on gps, im hoping this sanger will do that or better. The kona runs a naturally aspirated 505" bbc and a fully done pump with a blueprinted bottom. I plan on truing up the double concave sanger bottom along with adding full stringers and everything that goes along with making a boat like these safe and reliable. I also will be running a blown injected 496" bbc with water/methanol so hp shoudnt be too much of an issue

I would go for it. My Sanger ran a gps'd 70 mph with a spun bearing in my bone stock 460 ford. The full stringer is a definite upgrade I would do.

Nice looking boat! Looks like a great candidate for a fast lake rod.

You asked for opinions so I will give you mine. Every bit of experience that i have with this hull is that they love power. They are known to have a porpoising problem and mine had it likely worse than ANY that I have heard about. At times it was nearly unbearable, so much so that the pump would come out of the water and unload. This was with a low HP 468 NA motor. Fast forward a year, with a 500" blower motor... what a completely different boat. It blows right through the hop and takes a set... no porpoise, no drama, no nothing. I truly believe that it just needed the power to hold its head up.

My boat is a 77 superjet, it has that same bottom profile as yours with one difference. Mine was modified with a fairly large drop keel with some rocker built into it. I do have full cavitation plates, and a longer than stock rideplate with shoe. Yours appears to have had the sanger "bubble" on the transom cut off, which makes me wonder if the intake has been set back some. Id love to see more photos, and also if you need photos of mine... i have thousands. fyi: i have not had any gps numbers yet, certainly not mind blowing... but solid none the less.

iSanger, your boat has what is known as a Custom Sprint hull with a Super Jet top, I believe it was a custom built race hull for one of Sangers sponsored drivers. I really like that boat and wish I had a chance to take a look at it in person. I probably should have bought it when Tom had it for sale. I enjoy mine and was very successfull racing it in Nostalgia Jet with a 80.9mph max. With 530hp I was able to keep the boat right at 78.9mph in race water and was running 83mph in testing. The actual early Super Jets (pre '77) will eat up HP like it is going out of style. With that said, they are still a very good family Hot Rod, without doing a ton of stuff to the hull 80mph is not hard to do with a good pump and engine setup. I am now racing a '77 Custom Sprint and it is a totally different boat. I really liked the ride of my '76 but the '77 is a faster hull.

isanger: from what i can tell the "bubble" on the rear has never been there, I have a few pics of the inside and the wood is as factory as i can tell, the one thing that Im not too thrilled with is the flat deck style. I would have preferred to have the bubble deck, but i guess it will stand out a little better in the crowd like that. I am still thinking about a set back pump but not too sure it the rewards will ought weigh the time and headache, but i do want to do the best i can to make the hull as fast as i can the first time before painting it and speed coating the bottom. I really appreciate the feedback guys, It sure helps to hear some experianced ideas. Ill throw in a pic of my my current Kona just as a comparison.

The early Sangers do not have one, Pump bubble, they came in with the bubble deck. The set back is worth the time on those, it will help in the strieght line type lake racing. It will also help dropping the keel a lil bit during the setback.

thanks squirtin thunder, I just have a question on the dropped keel, how much of a drop and how far forward to carry it? Im assuming it could be build up with some mat and resin or..?

Without having the boat in my hands and studying the bottum, I can not tell you for sure. I would get a 10' - 14' straight edge and get the hook out and see where it takes you. Most of the Supers have a hook and the Sprints have rocker, so if you get it straight you should be good. The '77 I am currently racing is so much different but it has rocker as well. If you do a setback change the intake. It will be alot of work to fit in a standard style Berk intake but it will reduse the drag and give you alot more options.

great looken sanger. i had a 77 also with same bottom. great family ski boat loved it. This hull is built like a tank. half inch fiber glass throughout which is not the best for maken speed or acceleration. my 77 also had the horrible porpiose. would have to adjust the cav plates down an stuff the nose to stop it. not good for speed. imo the kona would wup the sanger all equal. my sanger ran 73mph. put same pump and power in my cp an ran 84mph boat half the weight.
In addition, my Super Jet had rocker in the bottom, not hook. Yours looks like the same bottom as I had from what I see from the aft picture.
Not the best bottom to invest in.:hmmm:joe
