As some of you know I raced bicycles at the elite level for a long time. One of the guys I raced with a lot in the late 80s and early 90s raced pro for a long time and it looks like he ended up getting into some drugs. Drugs are sure f-ed up.

Truely sad. I wish him the best.

I have an old ski racing buddy, one of the best all around waterskiers ever, speed, slalom, trick, barefoot, he could do it all, his wife at one time was the worlds fastset woman barefoot skier. They both used to ride bicycles, EVERY DAY, from Lakeland Village to the TOP of the Ortega hwy. ABSOLUTELY the LAST guy you'd ever think would go this way. I've talked , begged & pleaded countless times, trying to get him to see the light , to NO avail . Some people just do not want to be helped. Sad really sad.

It alwasys suprises me when someone with so much talent just throws it down the drain.

One of my friends emailed me this morning about this. He told me the last time he saw Chad was about 4 yrs ago doing sprint intervals up a hill in the rain in Norcal. His dad was behind him in a car yelling "if you don't go any faster, I will run you over".

Not funny, but true. When I was racing with Chad his father was the same way, kind of a soccer dad. He came up to me before a race and said his son was going to kick my ass in the race. BTW, I was only 17 at the time. I ended up lapping the field.LOL. I always liked Chad. He was not the friendliest kid, but he liked me because I was good as well and we would work over the field a lot.

I can't say it is everything, but it sounds like his dad may have played some part in the way he turned out.

My wife and parents were very saddend by this. None of us new him well, but I raced with him for yrs and you get to really become friends with your competition.

I have seen the previews for that program and its hard to watch people go through that. My little sister was hooked on speed for many years and there was nothing we could do to help her. My parent spent hundreds of thousands of dollars at rehabs (Betty Ford, The meadows and a few others) and nothing worked. After my father died she somehow go herself cleaned up. She now has a great husband a two beautiful girls and life is grand.

I wish your friend much luck.

I am not sure. It doesn't suprise me though. Like I said, Chad was a tough guy to really warm up to.
in the preview it was something to the effect "i'm gonna smoke ya tubbey" to lance:D then they asked him to leave the training center for good minutes later.

On the preview for the new season my wifes cousin's half brother is the younger looking kid with the beard sitting on the floor in a gas station bathroom using heroin and beggin on the side of the freeway with a homeless sign. His episode should be one of the first of the new season starting I believe the first week of July.

Cool! Some other cyclists on here. I'm a cat3 on the road. My fiance's son(thanks to me), will be doing the JR Nat's in Aug in the 15/16 age group.

One thing I've learned is that when the river starts, my racing season is over...:D

Found it.

"Gerlach’s erratic temper was well-known. He once punched Lance Armstrong at the Olympic training camp. And by the time he left cycling, he’d been dismissed by nearly everyone in the sport."

Isn't he the one hanging around the off ramp at the 15 and Magnolia? I remember you mentioning it once. Very very sad but there really is hope. I know people who are clean after years of drugs. They go to NA and one thing about addiction, it's not easy to kick alone.

Yes that is him. His name is Charles and I believe his episode will air on July 7th. So far he is doing very well kicking the addiction. In fact, the rehab facility in Florida gave him a job and is allowing him to stay and help with new people that come in as well as remain in therapy himself.

If anyone would like to watch this it will be on tonight.

Fricken sad.:(

We have the DVR set to record this series so I will probably watch it tonight. I didn't really get into this show in years past but since hearing about Charles' episode I've been watching. This show really hits home a lot harder when you know someone that is battling an addiction.
