I am hearing second hand, I didnt witness. Havasu's fire & police responded immediately.

Facts are.. A boat pulling out from beach and two youngsters directly in way of prop(s), older male (father perhaps) jumps in way and pushes children out of way and inprocess loses an ankle or foot via the prop in motion.

I have no other information

That bay is an accident waiting to happen. As it got hotter, people soak in the middle...right behind the boats.

More than once I had to tell people to move so I can start my boat and move it. They just look at you like "WTF"?

"WTF"? WTF is up with swimming where boats are operating?

Sad deal.

I thought it was common knowledge how dangerous it is to be at the rear of a running boat with a prop and that is the absolute responsibility of the helmsman to be sure all are clear before starting a vessel.

Sad situation.

You think this will have any impact on letting boats beach in there?? :)eh:)
Hopefully, security will limit swimming in the bay- there's too much Turtle traffic to swim in the middle.

I always double check before I start my engine and move the boat. In the channel their is always someone swimming close by.
Last weeek, I was idling through the channel when I saw something floating in the middle out of the corner of my eye.

Just on a hunch, I threw it in neutral. Turned out it was the baseball cap of some rocket scientist swimming across (his head was still in it).

That guy probably doesn't know how close he came to being a statistic.

Boating is s huge responsibility, I would venture to say that most people have no business out in a boat, let alone driving one. With all the drinking and driving going on these days and just lack of attention to you surroundings is unbelievable.

Everytime I open this site up, there's a death, an injury etc. I just can't believe it. Anyone with kids knows they would have done the same thing. Hope he recovers quickly.

Me three. I always look AT LEAST once. Before taking the helm. Then, out of pilot habit, I simply yell "CLEAR?" Or, my wife does the same thing, if she is driving. So, whichever one is NOT driving looks around the boat real quick - but mainly near the drive. Then, I even turn the key on for a second and wait, to see if someone yells after hearing the Mercruiser "BEEP". If all of that is good, I start up and back out.

Of course, that all happens in about 5 or 6 seconds, so it's not even like it takes any more time than normal.

if i understood correctly, the video link stated that the person struck was clearing the area behind the boat of swimmers. Sad to think that the driver was not watching his safety guy. Sux to hear about getting someone getting hurt like this... it could have been much worse!
