Felipe Massa is in "serious but stable" condition after surgery on a fractured skull after a bizzare crash during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. He was struck in the head by a spring that fell off the car of Rubens Barrichello. If you watch the video, it appears that he still has some conscienceness after being hit, because he appears to lock the brakes before slamming head on into the tire barrier. Scary nonetheless..............

very odd. Open cockpit racing is very dangerous.

Henry Surtees just died a couple weeks ago after getting hit in the head with a tire in a Formula 2 race.

The car in front of him crashed and the guys tire knocked henry unconcious and he slammed into a wall.

That wasn't that bad, Michael Shumacher had one that was worse and he walked away. And that is no were near as bad at the CHAMP car driver that was T-Boned over there. That one ripped his legs off.

this is the bad one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wXDQcFRY9I&feature=related

You high? Not that bad? Taking a suspention spring to the head at 150 mph or so!! That's nuts. Yea, the impact to wall was not bad, but that's not what broke his head.

Here is another high speed one.

Actually the surgery was to correct a "base scull fracture" which oocurs during rapid deceleration. It was hitting the tire barrier that caused the major injury which has him in such serious condition. Reports say the spring broke his visor & left a gouge down the side of his helmet. The broken visor caused a cut above his left eyebrow.

Really? Wow, I stand corrected.

Where did you find this info? I have not been looking too hard, I did not watch the race yet. I will when I get off work tonight.

I can't find anything about a base skull fracture either. Found this that said damage caused by the spring hitting the helmet.
Don't all race car drivers wear the same helmet restraints that nascar drivers use now?

Nascar was the last to require a hans type device, well with the exception of offroad racing... The doctors tried for years to get nascar to take safety seriously, nascar's decision "safety is up to the individual teams..." it was that way until earnhard, petty and another died, then they didn't have a choice.
Senna died when a susp piece went thru his helmet. DeMatta was finished when he hit a deer. This is a real shame, Massa missed the championship by one turn last year. He has been consistent, fast, and focused, even when the Tifosi wanted him gone.
We hope it is better than it sounds.

Beginning of the race they said he had sugery to remove pressure from his brain and had a frectured skull. They said he hit the 1.75lb spring at about 160 mph and the spring hit with over 1600lbs of force right to his helmet. He hit the wall at about 60. I doubt the tire wall did that.
