I'm thinking about running a v drive box in a 4x4 rig. I'm sure I'll need splined shafts with yokes instead of keyed smooth shafts, maybe 1 to 1 gears? I need a reverse rotation gear box to run a rear engine setup. would one hold up in a mid size rig? any advice or line on parts would be a big help. I plan on calling Casale too. thanks
In the late 60's, my Dad built a Thames Panel truck(small English version) which he boxed in the rear frame with 2x3 steel tube.. put a hot little 327 fuel motor in the back with the flywheel forward.. yep, used a Casale V-Drive up between the seats.. built a crossmember to hold it..
Floors were cut out and replaced with plexiglass.. hooked up the rear e brake cables to some levers for steering..
Was a wild little wheel stander.. titainium pads under the rear bumper threw a real spark show... he called it "Poco Loco II" and sold it not long after it was built.. tooo flippin' scary to drive... and I had my eye on it.. he seen that, couldn't get much by the "Old Man" LOL
Yes it can be done, I have seen them in some trophy/desert style race trucks. And those are parallel drives and actually called Z-drives depending on application. Also the very famous HEMI Under Glass uses a v-drive.
that's kinda what I'm playing with Mike. motor is set deeper and farther forward with a v drive mounted in front of a divorced 205 transfer case. ... don't ask me why. :bangmyhead:
thanks for all the information guys please keep it coming.)THumbsUp
Robby Gordon, Danny Porter and a few other were using them in desert racing to get motor way back, creating a mid-engine truck. I think they have phased a lot of them out. I think the sand trucks still use them a lot.
Yes call Tom...My buddy has a couple Buggies and Trophy trucks they race and I asked him why they don't like the v-drive setup and he said unless you are Robby Gordon they are a real handful to drive.
I have a parallel casale drive I will let go cheap. It was sold to me as a 10* v-drive and when I got it the seller disappeared. Anyway, if you are interested shoot me a PM. It will need to be rebuilt, but I am not going to try and get rich selling it.
using an ACE CHAMPION v drive ,strongest v drive ever made for there size. they were made in the early 70s only, can still be found online if you look. casale bought champion and has parts available, i have the motor and tranny mounted on the vdrive at the very rear of the bed , then a 13 inch drive line goes forward from the rear to a 12 bolt diff facing backwards, but not spinning backwards so it works fine.all street legal and fun to drive.
heres a picture of my set up here in utah, street legal, fun to drive and very reliable.
