I don't like to be redundant and post things on more than one board, but since I didn't get much action on RDP, I thought I'd try over here.

Anyone else read it? I'm not done, so don't give me any details about the end! I'm about 30% done. What a book! I had heard of it for years and heard many references to Ayn Rand that piqued my interest. But someone-somewhere told me that the book was glorifying selfishness (must have been one of those college professors LOL). So far, it seems to be the opposite, but I suppose it could be different based on the individual readers perspective. I debated putting up a thread about it until I was done because I don't want the end to be ruined for me, but I'm really dieing to discuss it with someone who has read it!

Sometimes it scares me, sometimes it pisses me off! The Rearden character reminds me of Jeff, though. ALWAYS thinking about business. It's just how his mind works. Helping me to understand him a little more in that regards. Kinda funny, I don't think it was intended as a psychoanalysis book, but it worked out that way for me a little.

I was 4 chapters into it then we bought a house. I've been a little busy to get back to it. I'm a big supporter to Ayn Rands philosophy on people. It's the reality of every day life that people do things to support their own interests. Take the reward away and we fall into a 3rd world country.

Check out her interviews on you tube. She was a very blunt and to the point person. Sometime crass but she spoke the truth with no regard of feelings.

Ayn Rand, Jason

Yes, I'm desperate. I even asked my fellow literature junkie that I work with. He's a lit teacher currently stuck teaching 8th grade English. He hasn't read it either. And I don't think I'd consider it fiction any more than Orwell was. Technically, yes. But you read it and realize that the story is really about the reality of the way the leading governments of the world are going.

Don't know about the book but she seems pretty accurate (in the context of that discussion)... Following through with her theories what has motivated our government to create the illegal immigration crisis, what could the motive possibly be??? To build new prisons and create jobs for that "industry"???

"stuck teaching" odd word choice for a true teacher.

People say I think to much...;)

Do fundamentals change?

OK, since your insisting on hijacking Angie's thread...

I guess for your sake I should have said "in the context of that video clip"...

IF you watch the OLD TIME interview of Ayn you will see in fact that her philosophy revolves around being TOTALLY self centered SO I mentioned the clip, provided the link and said " in the context of that discussion"... I thought that the old footage of Ayn may be interesting to Angie in lieu of her initial impression of Atlas Shrugged... I thought that it was relevant...

Now Shoosh...

Are you mexican or sumpin? Is that why you got pissed at my comments? :)hand

Angie, I digress and remove myself from this conversation IF you see fit... Didn't mean to bring up a potential government ulterior motive relating to the whole illegial immigrant issue IF that wasnt the direction your conversation is heading in... :D

I haven't watched the clip yet. No problem here, though. It's a clip of Ms. Rand, so it's definitely relevant to the discussion. I haven't had a book I couldn't put down in a while, so it's fun for me to be this interested in one again. And the gov't for sure has an ulterior motive with the illegal immigration. Why do you think that driver's licenses are stiff with a magnetic strip, holigram and picture, while social security cards are still made of paper and you may not even laminate them? They WANT them easy to copy. Then they collect more money they won't have to pay out.

Okay, I watched it. Not sure if the message was showing the opposite views of Obama and Ms Rand or that Obama had copied McCain's ideas. I think it should have stuck to one or the other. I did watch some of the other video interviews and they reinforced my new found admiration of the woman.

The link that I provided is more specific to Ayn's and Government being responsible for creating depressions and such. If you just search for her name on Youtube you will find several interviews with Mike Wallace from around 1960. She has some really ... what I consider strange ideas about... well, you will see... Her philosophy is strange to me but may not seem so strange to you...

As this thread progressed it didn't seem that it was specific to the book but rather Ayn, her philosophy AND Atlas Shrugged... Sorry again if I took this off track...

For the record I am probably JUST as suspicious of our Gov't as Mzzzz Rand... I don't think that it's our governments mission to do bad things but rather small groups OR individuals in and around the five sided building that have far too much power and the ability to make situations appear/disappear if they so choose... Maybe I just watched toooo many episodes of Xfiles... :D
