Any truth to this story Verticalscope???

Mr. Rob Laidlaw/Vertical Scope CEO has stolen membership Life Membership fees and won't return them. I was once a member of Triumphrat.net and was suspended for whatever reason. It's a long story and not worth repeating as it had no basis of fact or content.

I think I am going to call BS on this one Bruce. He is really free with the names both actual and user, and yet.........neither of his own. Not even the user name that was banned?? WTF is up with that??

I assure you that the top banner add is not a product of any cached searches FC... I can assure you of that...

The OBamanites prolly changed something in the URLs or IPs that verticalscope had previously "black holed"...

I did point out to the verticalscope Admins how to filter POLITICAL adds months ago, I suppose that the OLAMEO / DEM camp wiggles their way through by changing aspects of their adds...

I really feel bad for Pfaff/Bacca/Teague/REX and the real boating advertisers that funded this website for years, only to have their advertising filtered off by members in an effort to get rid of the political adds...

Do you remember how much crap we had thrown at us about political discussions in the OPEN WATER forums??? Where WE (conservatives) were accused of starting all of the political discussions??? WE were subjected to alot of crap from the lefties asserting that the conservatives were starting all of the political threads in OW...

I have never gotten a political ad on here. Mine are all hotels from around the world.

Is it possible that these targeted ads are targeting people who search political content or go to political sites in general (both conservative and liberal)? Meaning maybe you are being targeted with those ads for going to conservative political websites and not because you are going to liberal websites. just a thought...i don't know.

Yup. I played around with it and clicked/refreshed about a hundred times or so, including on the main page of the site and other forum sections - no political ads.

If you clear your cookies, including your flash cookies, then I bet the political ads will go away. For sure both banner rotations are using targeted cookies - mine are showing for hardwood flooring and website hosting, and some very specific trade stuff, all three catgeories which I recognize. There are the usual boating advertisements too.

CCleaner does a good job of removing cookies and is free (and is a great maintenance program), if you want to see what "flash cookies" you have on YOUR COMPUTER, type "adobe flash cookies" on a google search, then select the "adobe flash player settings manager" result/website, it should be the first search result found. It brings up a dialog box that will display all the flash cookies being stored ON YOUR COMPUTER (it's a 'live" window)...and you can remove them too, or clear them. Removing all of them usually results in having to re-log in on banking sites, gmail etc.

The top two banners, once you are logged on, are SOLD ads. They have NOTHING to do with cookies or anything else you can clear. I have seen them while on a company computer that has never been used to search political stuff. Those are SOLD ads that compete with the boating content ads that used to be the ONLY ads you saw prior to Vertical Scope buying the site.

HOWEVER, I do believe they could be tied to reading and posting and most importantly, opening links posted on the political forum of this site. If that's the case, you have no way to clear it because it is in Vertical Scope's data base. If that is the case, and I beginning to believe it is, then that SUCKS!!!
No matter the reason for them being there, Vertical Scope is selling the space, they are not simply goggle driven pop ups. Those occur on this site if you don't log on .
No doubt, Vertical Scope is making money on the political ads, and they NEVER seem to be Republican/Tea Party/Conservative ads. 100% socialist/commie propaganda.

One thing is undeniable, all this shit makes the pages of this site load like it dragging an anchor.

The top banner ads contain both targeted ads and sold ads; they are rotated.

Look at the below pic, you will see "Retargeter". Look at my open Firefox tab "What is Retargeting and how does it". I searched for a decent explanation of retargeting ads and cookies, their site set a new cookie on my machine, and when I again revisited PB, voila, their banner ads appear at both locations.

Proof positive the ads are a result of retargeted advertising using cookies. Visit the website and watch their banner ad appear: What Is Retargeting And How Does It Work?

If the ads still appear after you close your borwser, then the advertiser is using "persistent" cookies. not just "html" cookies. Again, CCleaner is a great utility if you want to clean them up.

You can also use Firefox with the "ad block plus" add-on, or try the new "privacy" browser named Epic Privacy Browser Epic Privacy Browser . Epic is a neat browser, it has a built-in proxy server button that masks your IP addy and keep sites from tracking you, it's a Chrome spinoff. The onlyother browser which does that is the TOR browser bundle, but TOR moves way too slow.

The possibility also exists that political ads could also be in the purchased ad rotation, only the site owner/admin would know that.

Retargeting, also known as remarketing, is a form of online advertising that can help you keep your brand in front of bounced traffic after they leave your website.
For most websites, only 2% of web traffic converts on the first visit. Retargeting is a tool designed to help companies reach the 98% of users who don’t convert right away.
How Does Retargeting Work?
Retargeting is a cookie-based technology that uses simple a Javascript code to anonymously ‘follow’ your audience all over the web.

Here’s how it works: you place a small, unobtrusive piece of code on your website (this code is sometimes referred to as a pixel). The code, or pixel, is unnoticeable to your site visitors and won’t affect your site’s performance. Every time a new visitor comes to your site, the code drops an anonymous browser cookie. Later, when your cookied visitors browse the web, the cookie will let your retargeting provider know when to serve ads, ensuring that your ads are served to only to people who have previously visited your site.
Retargeting is so effective because it focuses your advertising spend on people who are already familiar with your brand and have recently demonstrated interest. That’s why most marketers who use it see a higher ROI than from most other digital channels.
When Does Retargeting Work?
Retargeting is a powerful branding and conversion optimization tool, but it works best if it’s part of a larger digital strategy.
Retargeting works best in conjunction with inbound and outbound marketing or demand generation. Strategies involving content marketing, AdWords and targeted display are great for driving traffic, but they don’t help with conversion optimization. Conversely, retargeting can help increase conversions, but it can’t drive people to your site. Your best chance of success is using one or more tools to drive traffic and retargeting to get the most out of that traffic.

Bruce,

I debated you when you first posted about this....no more.

This Morning I SAW the Obama banner staring right at me....AFTER I had cleared cookies and logged back in.

You are correct...I no longer believe it is anything but straight up political advertising.

For a site that proclaims NOT to "like politics"...it seems rather hypocritical....especially when we know for a fact that at least one of the administrators is a flaming Obama nut swinging liberal.

I'm with you brother....see you across the way.:))THumbsUp

So your post got me thinking...and I think it's a combo of browsing on this site, and cookies. If you visit the PRF section, the PRF section of PB sets it's own cookie, which includes the political advertisements among the other rotations of ads. I too saw them on a cleaned computer, but only after visiting the PRF section. I'm sure other sections of the PB site set cookies based on the content for that particular section.

So it makes sense that those of us who do not visit the PRF section do not see the political ads. I have zero interest in the PRF thing, this topic interests me only because I like learning about cookies and this example is a good one to use :)

Cookies, BTW, are re-set once you visit the page. You can clear them, but shortly thereafter they will re-appear. Unless, of course, you use ad-blocking add-ons in FF, or maybe even the Epic browser. When I visited PB under Epic, no banner ads appeared.

Anybody else, what are you guys seeing?

Thanks NP! Added the extension and refreshed this page... VIOLA... No more advertisements.

A beautiful thing. Now let's see how it does on YouTube... NONE. No banners, no annoying (and lengthy) video ads... nothing.

Best Christmas present EVER. Thanks again!
