I puchased a couple of Whipple Quad 3.3 Whipple packages for my new 604 c.i. motors. The package included Autronic ecms and wiring harnesses which came off a 600c.i. motor. My engine builder likes the M.E.F.I. 4b. It would be convienient and cheaper to use the Autronic system, but would it be a mistake?

The Autronic ECUs are 1000 times better than a MEFI computer. They are inline of what a Motec computer is. In fact the guy who owns Autronic and the Motec owner used to be partners.

Very high end ECUs and awsome to tune with. I have done several of these and as long as you get someone who knows how to tune it they are awsome.

I would not get rid of them unless you just want to give them to me :)grn:)grn

Answering what is different is like saying a bug can out run a Ferrari.
Autronic is one of the best ECUs out there.... not often used because of the price and because they come from Australia.

Your engine guy wants to use MEFI because that is what he knows and what he can get support for. MEFI computers in general really suck compared to other aftermarket computers even some of the cheap ones.
You do have a good ECU there and I hope you get to use them.

I can tell you the software is almost more of an engineering software than most of the tuning programs. It has a bunch of stuff you can setup and will correct fuel even without a wideband based off all of the info you supply. It has alot more setup parameters than most ECUs.

I can tune for one. I know of a few people. Not in your area though.
If you want I can ask around and see if there is someone close to you.

Are you looking to tune on the engine dyno or in the boat? What is your plan of attack.

I planned on tuning on a dyno. The ECM's were on 600 c.I. Motors so the calibration should be in the ballpark. What I have to weigh is use the existing equipment or something that my service people can work with.

You really shouldn't have to mess with them after you get it tuned on the dyno. The software is available to download for free on the internet. Really there are only a few sensors and they are all GM stuff.

Give me a call and I can explain in more detail.

I totally agree. If I had the funds I would have bought the autronic ECM when building my quad efi. The mefi stuff is just above carberation. You can get a perfect running engine with the stuff you already have. And if they are set for a close to same engine the engine will start and most tuners will be able to go from there. The autronic will partially self adjust with the wide band operational.
Keep it. Or like previously stated give it to me.

Thanks for the response, the best tuners on the East coast here all use the MEFI I suppose it is what they know. My engine builder has done lots of EFI quads and knows how to tune this combination. With the SM-4 system I have there is no knock sensor, and my builder says that without this you lose the main advantage to EFI. The engine that this is going one will be about the same as the one it came off of. 604ci. If anyone needs the Autronic computers I have the 2 and 1 spare I will sell very cheap. I've got the manual and wiring harnesses(2). I would attempt to use it myself except I will get a warranty on all this expensive equipment with the MEFI. Call me at 270-991-3139 I would like to get this to someone who can use it. Thanks again for the help. Eric
