i'm going to go solid roller this weekend and want to know what size restrictors people are useing. i think you can get between .50-.80 to go into the back of the block, does it matter that much for what i'm doing or is it more just that i need them in and doesn;t matter what size? fairly mild bbc but do have high volumn pump with 10qt dooley pan. just want to make sure i'm not going to run the bottom end dry. thanks, AP

Personaly I would not use any, BBC's don't typicaly put as much oil on top llike a SBC. Every motor may act different tho. Does/did your motor ever spray oil across the room with the V covers off. I have yet to see a BBC do that. Although like I say some may, just none I have done. I would run it first and see. Proper windage and good drain back should be your focus. IMHO

Big Chevy's don't really have any drainback issues, so really do not need restrictors.


Also, IMO, you have no need for a huge volume pump unless you plan on filling very loose bearing tolerances with it.

Proper presure with ENOUGH flow, more work from the pump wastes HP, breaks distrib. drive roll pins (and pump drive shafts), and just generally makes a mess of a good working system.

wow this is weird i have put several sets of these things in never ever had issues why in the hell would you want to put extra oil up top with solids:)bulbyou dont need it up there,oh ive heard to cool springs of,b.s imo there is still plenty getting there just not drownding the hell outta your valvetrain.i use the .060 ones,oh well we all have what we think is best just funny that every body i have ever dealt with if you go solid you need them.good luck on whatever you decide:)hand

i'm pretty sure i'm going to use them. it seems like an easy choice. you have very little need for any kind of excess oil on the top (especially with solids) and in a jet you have 3-4000 rpms at normal cruise with about 60-80% load on the engine for sometimes as long as 20...30...40 min almost constant (depending on how big the lake is or where you're going on the river) but to me it seems that you especially don't need the (possibly) excess oil on top so why put it there when a $15 parts could remedy it.

my thoughts are that i am choosing the better of two possibilities in that i can restrict the oil up top because i really don't need it there, or i could just leave it flowing how it is (which may be perfectly fine) but there is the possiblity to starve the bottom which to me that seems to = very bad things and a lot of money.

am i off??

could or am i hurting anything at all by putting them in?

Oh yea thats right GM has been using them for years. LOL- go for it thats what keeps the aftermarket guys in business:)hand

can you give me a good reason not to run them? other than gm doesn't? i'm not really into the doing what other people (or manufacturers) are doing just because. i'm kind of big on having a specific reason. id rather have a choice and make it based on facts and pros and cons that are more closely related to my situatioin. just curious but why whould i ever run the engine with the covers off?

Im not a big fan of oil restrictors in my opinion chevys have enough oiling issues on the top end to start with why cut down the oil even more? Another issue to think about is that your oil helps cool the valve springs so if you start cutting down the oil you in turn stop cooling the springs as much as you would do without. Everyone has an opinion and if you wait long enough you will hear a ton of them. Do what you have always done if its always worked. good luck.

they did sell them with solids though...at one point.

so why you against it?
A regular solid lifter is a flat surface against a flat surface which requires lubrication. A solid roller is self explanitory, the ROLLER. People are gonna do what they do, and thats fine, i built plenty of motors and am friends with people who are better that the biggest names out there, i'm not braggin just the way it is. I will tell you only once not to jump off the cliff after that it's on you.

i didn't run any this time, i've herd the extra oil up top helps cool the springs more than run restrictors. maybe i can make a set last more than 1 season now:mad:

read the same thing on the rehr site, so i went without this season. i wore out a good set of springs out last season within 6-7hrs of use, and i didn't run a cam with over 700 lift or huge duration.

IMO you don't need one. If your worried about it, blueprint your oil pump. it will add more flow. But don't think you need to.

I felt I made my point on restricting the oil to the top on a BBC. Others have as well. As I said If you were running a SBC and racing it my suggestion would be different.
As to why would I run my motor with the v-covers off? Well even tho I may prime my pump and inspect for any oil issues, it is always a good idea to watch the valve train components while the motor is idleing/raised throttle. To me it is just a good practice. If you felt my point was to run the motor around the lake? Well then I guess thats what you thought.... People do lots of stuff, as I also said unless your seeing an unusual amount of oil on on top of your BBC I would not change anything, but again thats up to you. When your all done installing those, take off your covers and look while running( in the drivway) , I'l bet you will have very little if any oil coming from your rockers. Now put in it the water, idle around in the 5 zone or sit there at the rope ideling and.... Well enjoy your ride... There are some engine builders that use them, in some cases it is to correct other issues or used specifically in a racing application were the motor is on for seconds and at a time and is always way above a low idle- for the few seconds it's running... Is that what your intended purpose is? Or is it a lake deal? I would not add those unless I had some known good reason............

GM dosent sell their cars with solid fukn roller cams!!!!!

That may be a good point, but they have sold many a car/motor with solid Fukn lifters.

Or is it Fukin Chopin.
