Gentlemen, My Berk Suction just forward of the Impeller is
breaking away. My thrust bearing didn't let go & the clearances were
set right by CP Performance. Not sure what caused this, but what are
the options for replacing the original piece? Is there a big difference between
suctions from different manufacturers & which ones will bolt up to a JG bowl?
Just wanted to get my research done before pulling the trigger on a new/used
piece.........

American turbine makes about the best suction housing on the market these days.

Bummer about your misfortune, would be curious to see and try to analyze what actually happened , suctions do break and crack but not that often

Just had MPD build a new race pump for me. No budget restriction. Jack used a dominator suction piece!

I wouldn't expect any cast intake manufactured 40 years ago when H.P. numbers and impeller choices were limited to stand up to modern expectations. A four blade impeller creates 4 suction pulses every revolution.

Nothing last forever.

Very well put, a crack or blowout in what appears to be a thin-wall old Berk suction has always been a worry of mine, and an instant way to the bottom of my river :)Unsure

the dominator is the stoutest suction piece out there. but I was looking at a relatively new one yesterday that is cracked from the handhole through the bowl flange. which kind of demonstrates that no matter which one it is, if the set up is bad you can bust anything.

don't care if it was cp or someone else that set it up, something was missed that allowed moving pieces to cause the problem. there is no reason for a suction piece, berk or otherwise, to just start arbitrarily failing. I've been running a berk for a very long time, probably with a few more hp than in the average 74kona, and not had any issues. no matter which one it is, the setup has to be somewhere close so it's not getting hydraulically shocked to the moon over and over again.

Welp, I got the suction out and found the SS wear ring bouncing around in there and the insulator no where to be found. The Thrust bearing is fine. It chewed up the impellers wear ring surface and took out a 4" X 1/2" section of the lip on the bottom portion of the suction where it gets thin. It looks like something got between the impeller/wear ring..... So, I need a new suction, impeller & wear ring..... Time to go hunting.....
