Hello to all ,I’ve been plugging away on my latest project ,I’ve been doing all the basic maintenance on a 1986 checkmate enchanter with a factory 454 and 12jf pump .all the Berkeley pumps I’ve had in the past the bowls had gear oil in them ,this one is filled with grease?? Is there any advantages to this ?? How do I change it ?? Should it be removed and replaced with the gear oil ?? If so how do I get it out??

No advantage at all, probably more a problem. reason being grease in a cold working environment will not move and lube but it will tunnel away from a spinning mass and create a tunnel around the parts that need to be lubed. split the bowl and clean it all out, check the bushing, replace if needed then refill with light weight gear oil. Damn ok ,I have the manual for the pump ,I'll see what the job looks like to split it .hopfully no damage done ,who knows how long it's been this way.

90 weight gear oil with just enough transmission fluid to tint the oil is what i`ve used for the past 30 years for the bowl bushing. Take both plugs from the bowl, squirt oil in one until it comes out of the other. Replace plugs.

I know some guys use trans fluid to "wash" the inside of engines, but what is the goal of adding it to the bowl??
