First off thank you for the insight on my logs question. But now am wondering if I can tap the knowledge well on every ones experience with the best mods to do for getting the best reliability? I have a 396 bbc with a little bored out and a little cam, nicson logs and snails, and a Berkeley pump. Thank you it's greatly appreciated!!

After market intake manifold, good carburator, good electronic inginition, High flow exhaust, good solid rebuild and blueprint on the pump, Place diverter, loader grate. All of these items are good mods that will not effect reliabilityand enhance performance.

The best "reliabilty" mod I did to my boat was leaving it on the trailer it's pretty reliable that if I go look it's still there and in one piece ...

A good 750 vac sec holley, mech pump will go a long way for reliability and mpg.On a basic lake deal i also like the oval port heads. Good bilge pump setup is a must as well.

Like Greg suggested above , Jet Trim such as a Place Diverter is the "Bang for Buck" bolt on average install is around an hour and that addition will always result in a performance and handling gain Tom

For reliability, I would look into a good oil pan and cooler. At the very least a way to monitor oil temps you might be alarmed at what you see. If your running a stock car pan the oil control and capacity is really poor IMHO. A well plumbed cooling system is also a good idea. Search the site a ton of good ideas and sound methods are around. Use good quality components neither area is a place to scrimp on. A good ignition is a must like Greg mentioned. After getting these areas under control all of the above mentioned upgrades are excellent advice. Good luck Scott:thumb:

Well before you start all that does it start right away? Whats the electrical system like? Is it taking on water anywhere just sitting in the water. What sort of shape are the cooling hoses in. Are they rubber or steel braided? Are the hoses off and see if the fittings are full off mineral deposits and stuff? Hows the compression? Whats size carb does it have. Most engines tend to have way to big a carb on it. Like Obie said a vacuum secondary 750 max but make sure it is a vacuum secondary. If you already have this then a rebuild by someone that knows what they are doing is a reasonable expense. Check the hull over real good. Hate to even spend 10 bucks on it to find out it is full of dry rot. Don't get to deep in it to find out you are past the point of no return. No sense in spending a punch of money on the pump if the motor doesn't run.

I agree with Mike,the systems have to be in good shape (cooling ,electrical,fuel,bilge pump):yes: don't agree bout the carb thing, just my opinon:indifferent0001:

Not to much you can do to a 396 thats going to wake it up unless you consider a well sought out build, cam springs intake heads headers ect.. Just get a P/D or some sort of trim device, loader and enjoy it for now....)THumbsUp
