540 cu in 14-71 blower with bird catcher on gas in jet boat. have primer on it and starts good when cold but after you run it and get it hot and cut off with fuel shut off on top of pump the only way to start is to open butter flies and then when it fires it takes off. thanks

Because your pump is probably above the level of the fuel tank and when you shut it off with the fuel shutoff you essentially dry up the system. You pull the fuel shutoff and the engine revs and the motor goes lean....emptying the lines.
Kill it with the mag kill and then immediately close the fuel shutoff. This helps keep fuel in the lines for easier starting next time.
Each system has it's own technique.
Play with it.

Turn it off electronically, no reason to use the fuel shut off unless you get in trouble...stuck open throttle. Leave the fuel in the system.

When you go to alcohol, you will want to evacuate the fuel system because the menthanol will attack your aluminim (lines, tank, etc).

If its an immediate restart (up to 5 minutes) you probably won't even have to re-prime, just turn it over. Typically, everyone uses a bottle which is sold from gear oil as a primer bottle. One good squeeze (probably an ounce of fuel), hit the start buttom, let it turn over a couple times...starts about 30% of the time. If it doesn't, feed fuel into the injector hat, butterflys closed with a light squeeze into the hat...starts pretty much everytime by now. Not too sure about your combination, but that's a typical start up.

not sure how to load pics but used a gas nos solenoid tapped in to side of bird catcher and can hold on until the engine fires when cold. It looks like it rich when trying to restart. thanks
Then it could be that the fuel in the line between the nos solenoid and the nozzle.....gets hot from the heat of the engine and the fuel rises to the nozzle and "primes" the motor.
Consider moving solenoid closer to nozzle (shorter line).
