My favorite was "but I'm leaving for Lake Powell in 2 days and my boat won't start". "Sorry sir but we've been booked out for 2 weeks since before Memorial Day". "Can't you stay late or make someone else wait?"
So ridiculous! But being the sucker that I am, I would stay late and come in early for customers. That was hard on me, my wife and my son. That's why I left the industry, 10yrs was enough

Heres some real time humor,

Just got a call from Oriellys auto The commercial guy Mike says "I got a guy here with a boat with electrical problems" I say what kind of boat Mike says a "big inboard ski boat " I say I dont work on those boats then ring ring The boat owner begs me to please take a look at it, I relent and say bring it by...5 min Up rolls a 40K Tournament boat. I test his batteries his aux battery is stone f*kin dead meanwhile the owners screwing with some sort of latch . I show him the battery test and I say tell you what I got those same batteries inside, I'll throw one in for you ,Tournament man says naw I'll just go over to Wal mart:(((((( I said SWTG? I get down out of the boat and walk away shaking my head muttering obscenities . A couple minutes later the owner walks in and says hey that hatch latch handle is loose can I borrow an Allen wrench :duh:................... anyone want to guess what happened next (I went nuts)

I got video not sure I can play it yet

Let no good deed go unpunished.................
A good mechanic is hard to find; I was into Fords when I was in HS, had a Comet(Maverick) and needed some brake drums...went to ABC Mustang Junkyard in San Leandro, got some, then thought I was real smart asking how do I know these are good? So he writes a receipt on the back of a biz card! After dealing with him for a few years I realize he is one of the most trustworthy(And smart) mechs I have ever met- He now owns ABC Mustang repair in Hayward, and also builds South African(?!) Cobra kit copies- aluminum bodies and all. He owned at one time a Mangusta and a 429 BOSS.....One of the things that made me realize how Good/trustworthy he was is that he was always willing to admit that he didn't have the answer....Too many mechs will BS you just to get Biz.....Sometimes the best answer is "I dunno!"

Thanks to all the good mechanics, especially the ones who help but don't charge.....A light should shine down upon you.....

Engine shop is the same way. They want you to tell them what parts to buy somewhere else.

Had one guy ask for a list of part numbers. He got pissed when I told him no.

What don't they understand about providing a service. Buying the parts from us comes with a service that they are getting the right parts for what they are doing.

We are perfectly fine with people bringing their own parts. When they are wrong they get to chase down the right parts. About the third time they bring the wrong stuff we might give them a hint. LOL And an explain about the service they overlooked.

Best ones are we machine the engine for what they bring. They assemble it and the parts don't work together. And get pissed that we didn't trial assemble it or we didn't know or tell them they wouldn't work together.

About 1996 in July, it's 100 degrees outside, busier than a cat covering crap with sawdust on a windy day, this guy rolls up with his bling boat and his obnoxious family and asks if I can help him with the steering that seems to be stuck. I told him my hourly rate and handed him a work order to be filled out and said I may be able to get to it by the end of the following week.

So this guy says he was on his way to lake Shasta for a 10 vacation and he just picked the boat up out of another shop for service and they were closed for the day, he was in a jamb...

Reluctantly, I take a look at it (without having him fill out and sign a work order) :bangmyhead: and find out that the rudder is bent from hitting the bent trailer from what looks like a curb hit... So I told him what was going on and that I did not have the parts to fix it at the shop, that they would have to be ordered. He asks if there was anything I could do, so I told him we could try lifting the boat up from the trailer and see how bad the rudder was, I grab a floor jack and a carpeted block and start jacking boat off the trailer, the rudder is now off the bent portion of the prop guard but still frozen solid, so I grabbed the rudder and it literally snaps off just inside the stuffing box in my hand....

So this ass-hat starts screaming at me and telling me that he was going to sue me for breaking his boat.... :)eh:) WTF?

So I said, well, since you didn't fill out a work order like I asked you to, there is no record of the boat ever even being here, so have a nice day.... Without a working boat BTW...
He threatened to call the Sheriff on me and that I destroyed his personal property, I simply told him "go ahead, better call an ambulance while you can still talk, because by the time the Sheriff gets here I am going be kicking the living sh!t out of you".... You could have heard a moth burp as he got in his SUV and drove away...

Come to find out, this dickhead stiffed the other shop for services rendered because he said they scratched the boat while it was there.... The scratch in question was consistent with a docking incident...

Man people can suck butt....

That's another great story. Unless you've been there, you'll never know how shitty people are. After 10yrs of being a whipping post for customers and their bad decisions, you'll never meet a nicer more laid back customer than I. Food, car, doctor, cable, clothing store. You name it, if your in the customer service industry I am you favorite customer. Until you treat me wrong, then it's game on.

Very well said! LOL I am the same way. Had a mechanic charge my wife for a Snap On wrench because it broke taking a diff apart? Asked him why 1 didn't heat the nuts up first and 2 will Snap On give me the new wrench that I was charged for. He was nicer after that but no more free sandwiches from my wifes shop across the street.
