How do you guys go about breaking in a new motor?
I know with a car the basic rule is 500 miles of gentle driving, etc...
Not sure with a boat motor.
The cam break in I understand well enough, but do I need to putt around the lake for a while or what?

Also, is 10w-30 oil heavy enough?
I feel pretty confident with the Valvoline VR1 stuff and a bottle of Lucas break in oil.

With a little luck I'll have this thing on the water Wednesday.

I think there's as many opinions on this as people building engines. I think all the experts would agree that cam break in is crucial. After that, I've heard "I flat foot it from one end of the lake to the other. If it survives then it's a good one." Me personally, a tank of gas of light then moderate loading the engine. Change the oil, cut open the filter. If it's clean, your good to go.

I used 10-30 mobil conventional oil on the dyno.Ran the engine till it made the oil temp come up to 210 and made some medum load pulls. This time was also used to dial in the timing and make some carb adjustments.Maybe 1/2 hr or so. Put in the 20-50 and made full power adjustments.

Yep that's what I did broke in the cam cruised it for about 15 minutes, then id make a hard pull and cruise and repeted that for most of the day. checked oil and rplaced fuel filter than beat the hell out of it. I don't think there is right or wrong way most people think its good after cam break in, just take in account what you spent to build it, it schould be built to run so run it lol
