Last summer when my other Bahner was in socal getting working on, I picked up this turd, 1981 Bahner bubble deck, for 1500 and was going to use it for the summer. The idea was to use and do as much of it as possible my self, and use what was around the shop for minimal cash outlay. Mind you the boat didn't look anything like it does now, it was mega sunburned original gel, no interior, rotten floors, bulkhead, no rub rail molding, junk berk pump. It did have some nice stuff that made me think it could be saved, polished imco tanks, lightning rail kit, and unmolested hull, competitive trailer with western wheels and chrome fenders.

Started by replacing the rotten floors and bulkhead and adding an extra 1/4 of glass in the bilge area around the pump area up to stringers and front of motor. While had the intake out, added an a/t ride plate kit and machined the intake for a shoe. Had all the pump stuff re powder coated by a buddy for trade, filled it with an AQ shaft, mpd inducer, mpd ss impeller, stuffer, and ftn kit. All off these parts I had from other trade deals over the years,( had to buy inducer, bearing, wear ring, gaskets) had my diverter machined to accept ftn nozzle. Looking back, should have converted it to a round keel instead of delta pad when had it apart but, maybe next time.

The motor is relatively fresh 454 that traded for some chassis work by a customer, features four bolt block, std steel crank, dimple rods, comp hyd roller cam, merlin rec port heads, ferrera valves, comp magnum rockers and girdles, top with a Williams 850 carb, motor makes a solid 560 all day long, nice little package on pump gas. M/T valve covers are original to the boat.

Didn'thave any seat patterns so this is what we came up with, made the new seats with marine grade plywood, had Rattle Can resin them up, and had my upholstery buddy Steve do the seats, carpet, traded out work on his 50 dodge panel. Had to buy the materials though.

Finished the boat up by installing new a rub rail, gauges, cables, wiring, picked up some nice used headers from someone on the boards, had most of the earls fittings had to buy the hose and a few other odds and ends. Installed new lights on trailer, rewired, made new side boards and carpeted, packed bearings, had new tires on trailer when I got it, had buddy Doug pinstripe trailer for a couple of cocktails.

The gel came back to life with a good wet sanding and buff job, an little faded in areas but it holds a shine, and looks halfway decent. I haven't done the final tally on costs yet, but I'm thinking in the 4000.00 dollar range for cash outlay on parts and materials.

Overall, pretty happy with the boat, its defiantly satisfying to bring an old clapped out relic back to life!! Didn't get it done for last year, but she is ready now. Hope to take her out in the next few weeks, then get stared on the other Bahner for next year.

That turned out great, but like what was mentioned already i would make sure to cover those seats with some towls. I have all black boats and i love how they look but man if you don't splash some cold lake water on them before getting in or out you'll be sorry! :D

Came out beautifully! Your "budget" boat is what mine one day hopes to become:D I just finished wet sanding my '78, but curious what you used to put the polish back on it? Congrats again!

Update

A quick update on the bahner, Have had it up to the lake about 18 times already this summer, and has performing flawlessly, with no problems. After reading the thread on loaders, I took out the one that i got with the boat and had MPD build me a fresh custom one, just to be on the safe side.

When I first took it out, I thought that this thing was a very ill handling boat compared to what I have driven before, its super light and it seemed to have a hard time staying in the water (wanting to fly) but after changing the shoe depth and ride plate, and some time in the seat it really came around! The power to weight ratio is amazing once I got used to it, now it's very fun to drive !! A buddy had a gps up last night and it did 78.4 , was pretty happy with that!! May have some more left in it, but good enough for now. The v drive section has some pics of it getting aired out on our Tuesday night deal, enjoy!!

Very nice.
Bahner bubble deck's are very fun boats to drive.
I loved mine, looked just like yours, i got it up to 94.4 mph on gps with around 750-800hp, that was with a home built pump, and a ARS boly on rideplate-shoe combo, nothing special.:partyguy:
Now if i can only get my CP to do the same:shock:
