This appears to be at 'face-value'.... another "you cant have your cake and eat it too" type of situation... (maybe Im mistaking) But it appears that SCMA is another typical lobby group FOR CA BOATERS (which I do appreciate) but at the same time I understand that CALIF is going through an ENORMOUS deficit reduction program that is TRYING to eliminate all the EXTRA BUREAUCRACY that we all bitch and moan about on a daily basis around here....

I totally understand that having the DBW controlling "funding" for boating is much better than the DPR but in this instance of trying to get rid of CA Bureaucracy for the betterment of the entire state, I have to agree with DFGB... (Dumb F_ Gerry Brown) There are MANY departments that need to be Demobilized, the employees fired and sent packing and trim the fat off of this obese pig of a STATE that we know today....

Lets looks at it from a simple perspective.... A family of four is living on their basic Mid-Class income of $100K a year; housing, food and transportation takes up 95% of their total net proceeds. The other 5% is for everything else they want to do, boating, hiking, movies, dog, cat care, vacations... etc. Dad takes a salary hit of a 10% reduction in pay.... do you think that for the sake of saving the boating fund we should eat 10% less food??? Or do you take away from the little bits to better the whole?

I know.... and if "Dad" was the State of Califony, he'd just go out and rob his neighbors to pay his overspending ways.... :)sphss

But that aint the way it works if WE all are truly behind trying to make CA GOV live within its own means.

Just sayin....

The problem with your thinking here is perception. It would really be great if useless bureaucracies were reduced and eliminated and the useless people that went with them were sent home but that is never going to happen. Instead, much of the $70 million that is collected from boaters will be diverted to areas and programs that have nothing to do with boating, as there will be justifiable overlapping expenses. No money will be saved. Our taxes won't go down and bureaucrats will not go off the payroll. State employees don't get laid off. They get new duties that often are worthless functions.

Just like the OHV fund money which routinely gets robbed, the money that was once earmarked for boating infrastructure will now go to building more picknick tables at state parks and hiring more state park rangers to make sure that you don't carry a beer onto state park property. Money that might have gone to build new ramps, docks and channel markers. If I fund this buracracy with my user fees, I want it to pay for those things. Not swing sets.

This happened many years ago with vehicle taxes that were collected. It was said that a portion of the taxes would go directly for road maintenance. Well, it did untill the CA government decided to pool all of it in the general fund. Look at the roads now. This is how the boating funds will end up, wasted by the bureaucrats.

Yes indeed! As well as the extra taxes on fuel. Those taxes got redistributed to paying for our national debt which Obamo has escalated. In the end, just another form of taxation to pay for our credit card bill to China.

Great post and your comparison to the OHV funds is perfect.

Sidebar:

Don't worry they will F things up real good and next they will merge the Fish and Game with PETA and have it operated by one of the PETA Directors.

Lovely,
