there were only 2 of these made - with a 454 and a tunnel ram with 660s and a 280 cam it did 56 mph - unless chop was just right then it would free itself up and once did 59 - problem was it was all out of motor just at the time she wanted to get with the program-
soo-

could you guys tell me if im doing ok with this set up -

brand new 4 bolt LS6 block standard bore - forged crank nitrided- and cross drilled - been in crate since bought in 1978
7/16 dimple rods - brand new with ARP bolts- fully polished and nice and smooth -
11 cc forged GM pistons - full floating
990 heads 2.30 and 1.90 unshrouded and gasket matched to felpro gaskets - fullly polished - they CC at 121 ccs and intake is 328 on all ports plus or minus 1 cc- these heads are brand new - never been run
this puts static compression at 8.85 to 1
Short BDS manifold - gasket matched
BDS 871 set up as tight as possible - anodized - BDS says its as close as it gets To teflon stripped without adding teflon- it is brand new -
Super Chiller with dedicated inlet and outlet - pick up is of cav plates so it wont chill so much when im in 5 mph areas
2 - calibrated 750S with modified Enderly Bugcatcher - used as just a scoop-

how much HP will this thing make on 91 octane over driven 12 percent making 8 lbs of boost ? I am also running MSD box that retards timing 1 to 3 degrees per pound of boost - - I have MDS distributor locked out and set at 34 degrees and will retard 2 degrees per lb of boost - however that is easily changed with a dial on dash 1 to 3 degrees -

also - I modified the exhaust - it is not pictured - these old school GIL manifolds are massive - they are bigger than the 990 exhaust ports to the collector - from collector I made my own head pipes - jacketed - so i have a true 4.5 inch straight shot out the back- and the water jacket dumps into the exhaust in the last 1/2 inch to satisfy the police - as long as they see water coming out they leave us alone- this will be a huge improvement on exhaust flow - 2 1/8 inch runners to a 4.5 inch straight shot head pipe--
main reason i did this was for flow- however -now i can run OS sensors on each side to make sure im not running too lean --

rings were all gaped at .027 top and .024 second per Total Seal and top ring is a Moly Ring

oh shit - kinda hard to help me without the Lung info--

Cam is a Crower custom grind Crower helped with --
duration at .050 on intake is 252 and exh is 256
108 intake Lobe Center and 116 Exhaust Lobe Center

advertised cam specs -- 290 intake duration with .700 lift clearance hot is .020
Exhaust duration is 298 with a .677 lift hot clearance is .022
it is a full solid roller cam with crower roller lifters - titanium keepers - locks, springs and seals are all Crower - all came as a kit - -ordered per their recommendations for this set up?
Crower roller rockers with girdles -

thats what im hoping to gather here on the forum- I have no idea on what this is going to do? pump is an experimental pump- mostly Drake parts - it is massive - have never been able to spin it fast enough to find out its limits - this motor outta find it i hope --
Drake only made 240 pumps I believe- this one however was their baby - their racing pump and was all experimental-- wish i could post more picturs - the jetovator of sorts on this pump has 2 massive scoops that pick up water along with the jet roost - if you are familiar with the needles area of the colorado river- it throws a roost over the needles bridge when engaged - the nozzle is 5.5 inches and the impeller is 18 inch diameter 3 blade- I had to make alot of the parts to get it to work right - there are no parts available-- fortunately castings i can do in house - so if i need more pitch on this thing - i will make a new impeller-- that is my only option -

I do not have any good shops around here that i trust to dyno this thing or i would - i can tune it with the O2 sensors - i know the holley carb inside and out - used to work for The Magician - John at C&J Engineering in whittier- - santa fe springs now since the fire

im ready to fire this thing up- going to reverse the pulleys to 12 under for break in just to make sure im ok- I was just hoping you guys that have the knowledge first hand could look at my recipe and let me know if ive missed in any area - i cant afford to build another one- any advice would be very much appreciated - im no expert - i have no experience - I just did the best i could with what was reachable--

I'm going to toss out something that I don't know anything about. So, please excuse my ignorance.

You say that you are running 34* locked timing, and then you say the MSD retards 2* per pound of boost, which would be 16* at 8 lb boost. That only leaves 18*.

For those who have knowledge, would the 18* be appropriate?

ya i kinda wondered about that myself - this is MDSs new supercharger box called a MSD 6BTM ignition control p/n 6462-- it says designed for turbo /supercharged engines -- retards timing based on boost pressure- adjustable from 0 to 3 degrees per pound of boost with a nmax of 15 degrees retard also has adjustable rev limiter

Fuel delivery -- i have 2 side tanks both are 20 gallon
welded in bungs at bottom rear of both - number 16 an hose connects them both now so they will stay at the same level- - welded in 2 number 10 an pick ups to a number 12an tee- to pump - running a Products Engineering pump 460 gph pump with filter - - 10 an out to fuel log and regulated to 8 psi - number 6 an hoses feed the 2 holleys - have fuel pressure gauge on dash - dummy light at 4 lbs - - from fuel log have a an 8 return with a .100 jet in it - return line runs back to a t - then to both tanks -

also welded in top front bung for 1/2 inch breathers for both tanks - breathers are in front of tanks with 2 loops in each line so gas wont purge - --- i hope !!

updated pictures

hoprfully no news is good news - and the experts are not laughing so hard they are just unable to comment yet!!!

forgot another thing i did to hopefully get this thing to run well- I blocked off the power valve holes in base plates of both carbs- drilled thru the side and installed a port to the power valve chambers with 6 an fittings - ran both lines to the manifolds newt to my manifold vac port - - so both power valves will see real manifold vacuum / boost - power valves are 3.5 s-- does this sound correct ?

i know there are some guys on here that know their S$%T- sure hope they read this post - I dont recall seeing them in the Super Trash Pump Forum though??
I would not have anything else in a riverboat though - I make a living fixing out drives here on the river - they never did make any sense to me for river use-

I do have a turbo 400 and a casale Vdrive that one of these days this boat is going to get its engine turned around !! - kids are all grown and gone so a 2 seater is not a problem anymore --
standing bye- tomorrow is the big day -- -------------

current changes

i made a lifting wing to see if it will help get its fat A$$ out of the water and break loose - bottom is straight - no hook -

Swapped top end to a different supercharger and carb set up - cosmetic only - mechanically exactly the same -

Some photos of head work

I'm surprised there aren't more comments. It looks like a really cool set-up.

You mention about possibly making it into a V-Drive someday. Again, it isn't something that I can say I know about, but I'd suggest getting in touch with someone who knows about these things. Typically, different types of boats have different requirements and designs. Just a few things to consider would be, do the stringers run forward enough to support an engine and V-Drive configuration and usually the bottom designs for an outboard, V-Drive and jet tend to be different. My guess is getting a different boat designed for a V-Drive would be more logical. Of course, in this forum for boating, logical isn't a word that gets used a lot.

With your work experience, I'm guessing you probably already know this stuff anyway. Whatever you're doing, you've got a cool boat.

What A Great Day - thaanks Performanceboats.com

Thank you guys very much - I put alot of time in it - naturally wish i had an aluminum block- more CIs, aluminum heads - fuel injection- lol -- etc etc-- but this is what i could afford and i did it all myself-

Test fired engine today on a test stand - primed the oil system real good - set distributor at what looked to be dead nuts at between 30 and 35 -- used 110 race gas- disconnected all 4 lines to carbs and purged system then connected to carbs-- made certain msd was in fact going to fire- put in new NGK R5671-a 8- 2 sizes colder than stock and I gapped them at .031

So about this time The A Team shows up- you know the ones- that set of friends that only came over hoping to see an explosion and fire!!
what a great help these guys are!!

I said to myself ive checked everything 5 times- 2 different forums said i should have a winner here- - going over in my head everything 1 last time - piston to valve clearance was .072 - - I degreed in the can 2 different ways and twice - geometry is all perfect - ordered push rods last after i had exact measurements - Crower made them for me with .120 wall -
cam card said .020 int and .022 exh valve lash HOT - so i set them at .022 and .024 to compensate for the cold engine

I flipped ignition switch to on and pushed start- Whollllyyyy Fu%^in Sh&t- she lit on the 3rd revolution and scared the living crap out of me - RPMs were at 1500 - checked timing it was 32 - fuel pressure 8 lbs - what a beast - this thing idles like my alcohol motor with mechanical injection- - love that surge -- and the belt noise with from the gates polychain with 11 mm - is just awsome - almost forgot checked the O2 sensors and ill be dammed-- 14.5 average on both banks at 1500 rpms -- all over the place at idle -
oil pressure was 78 lbs - - I wish i had my shit together and would have video taped it to share =- but i was nervous as a whore in church- i had my hands full especially with my good buddies all here- i let her run at 1500 for 5 min -- set idle around 900- the surge is awesome - i dont think i will tune that away -- i love it - gave the throttle a couple whacks and she responds like right now- had good vacuum for this set up - about 12 when i whack throttle -- never goes under 6 at idle so my power valves at 3.5 should work

It was a great day and i just wanted to say thank you to this Forum - lots of people looked at my set up - a couple of you responded - and as far as i can see right now -- It appears to be a runner- going to put in the boat and get all dialed in this week- cant wait to put her in the water --

Thanks to all of you -- I really do appreciate the help and I will keep you posted on how she does - - i never did reverse the pullies -- so it will make some boost --
my alky engine is 1500 hp roughly - im going to guess this one is at 1200 - its pretty wicked - Thanks to Crower too- you guys nailed it ! exactly what i was hoping for - nasty nasty surge and blower whine - and she will be running 6500 rpms was the target - 6000 to 7000 is what its supposed to do-- i would be pushing my luck with this engine to go over 7000 - so rev limiter is chipped at 7000

what a great day -- thanks guys!!:)devil:)devil:)devil

i gotta share this --

the reason im still in awe of this engine is due to my last engine i built- it was not storybook perfect to say the least - I had a venturi overflowing in one of the carbs and i had the dreaded chevy intake manifold leak- i used those Fu%^ing crappy gaskets on both ends - why ?? i dont know- but sure enough they leaked - so start up was just brutal- popping choking coughing - stall - fire up rich as hell- on -- and on - and on-- so this was just a blessing for me -

ive built and repaired hundreds of naturally aspirated engines as i own a boat shop- but these blower motors are relatively new to me - so it is an exciting time in my life learning- especially when i pay the bills- I know - I know- if i own a shop im doing somrething wrong because everyone knows if you own a business your automatically a quadbillionaire- I know- and yes i am definately doing something that prevents that and i can not shake it - I still care about quality and integrity and with those 2 things - its hard to get rich in this business - but i sleep well and love what i do -- so it is worth it !

thanks again guys- John

Wow, nice boat. Engine looks great, good attention to details. My guess for HP would be closer to 1000hp just because of cubic inches. Not that your guess is wrong, just my humble guess. Keep up the pics! If you're running 110 fuel, I don't think you'll need to retard ignition that much. Usually see more retard for pump fuels.

For blower experts, I've used/talked to the following; Bostick Racing Engines, Beck Racing Engines, RD Racing, and AlkyDigger. Bostick is in San Diego, Beck is in Phoenix area, RD is in Minnesota, and AlkyDigger is in Tennessee.

Looks good. I may have met you. I've known and used John since the late 80's. Only 1 thing I caught. You didn't do the cold lash correct. The motor grows with heat. So generally the cold lash is tighter than the hot lash. Good luck and let us know how she does!!!
