I dropped by the trim shop as I am fixing my new to me truck a bit. I have been doing business with the same people for over 25 years so we know each other on a first name basis. It had been a while since I've had them do any work for me, less boat registration numbers.

So I ask the owner, "How has business been."

He said, "Not so great, but it is picking up a bit."

I asked him, "I guess the Obamaconomy hasn't helped much?"

He said, "More than you know. It all started with the 'cash for clunkers'. People traded in their old cars and bought new ones. Since they were paying notes, they had no money for custom items. Not only that but the used cars traded in were destroyed causing affordable cars for some to disappear."

Anyone on here heard anything similar? Sounds about right....

These guys don't realize that the economy is fragile. Every time they get involved they screw something up. The market will right itself if left alone.
One of the industries they screwed up was LPG powered vehicles. They were making great strides on performance of cars on LPG. A friend had a 10 second Nova II that was running on LPG. Lots of engineering involved. Then Clinton decided that the way to go was electric cars and the government dumped money into it. My friend as well as others in the LPG development business pulled out for the government grant money. They didn't want to but their competitors jumped at it, so they had to follow. I wonder how far alone we'd be with LPG and the costs of conversion if the government hadn't gotten involved.

They missed the mark, if they would design a car that ran on bullshit our politicals could power the world!

Ya got that right. That CFC deal was the WORST thing ever. Took out a lot of work for the repair shops..(same story my friends who run a repair shop, and ya can't survive on oil changes)

Plus it took out a LOT of good used cars and trucks, that were great rides got at a good price. My dumb neighbor had a workhouse Ford Ranger as a second ride, and a 'Outback" for daily use. Well, she did the CFC on the Ford, traded in the Outback too, and bought a new Honda "Fit" . Well, guess it didn't "Fit" to well..(shes a ...how to gently put it..BIG girl)

So she traded that in for a Prius. Better mileage? Damn, she only does 30 a day to and from work? Not to bright. Just heard she is so underwater the house, going to do a "Estate auction" soon, sell out, and give the house back to the bank, and move in with her sister in Fl. There goes her credit rating now too. And so it goes...

Thing is all those small great trucks are gone, and a bitch to find a good used one now. Another great idea that "didn't work"............

Ya wanna know what pisses me off? The "original" CFC...think WW2 aircraft, chopped up for scrap metal. The planes, motors, Allisons, Merlin's, old radials....hard to find now. Think the V 12's in Unlimited..(NOISE!), etc. Now "sewing machine" noise.. turbine motors. Aint the speed, its the SOUND. Think the 20's, to 70's what WE built with "combustion motors? (Muscle cars?) Now.."electric crap rides?" Calling BS here.. I'm 63, and remember as a kid, doing "planes rides", out Illinois to see my Uncle and Aunt west coast..(and my Aunt Ruth passed on Friday at 98, and lost my Uncle before, a founder of the "Long Beach Races..solid "gearhead"). But first a DC-3, then a Triple tail "Connie". Dad loved it..also did before 3 roads trips RT 66, the "Mother Road". But the plane rides were "low and slow, and scenic"! Then did a first jet, a 707, and dad HATED it, as simple getting there, was NOT THE TRIP, .."it was the scenic on the way!" 33,000 feet saw shit. Glad I'm the tail end life, but its been a DAMN GREAT ride to now....WTF happened common sense the US, ..like Elvis.."has left the building"...(for good too..sad).. Its the ride there, NOT how fast ya can get to the "destination"....

Robby,
I agree 100%!! Everything is about speed and getting there instantly... With everything. We are raising generations of " instant gratification " kids.... No one really holds to the adage " getting there is half the fun " anymore... Really a shame and a reflection on society now....
Personally, I try to take my kids on the road less traveled, to slow them down from this sick speedy society!!

80s????

I think it was back in the 80s when the Union 76 oil company started the idea of crushing the older "gas guzzlers". I'm a little shaky on the details, but remember a lot of the old restore-able relics were sold for scrap metal, much to the dismay of car enthusiasts everywhere....

Ray,
i'm one of those in dismay as the collector car / restore is my business....
But hippies and Progressives praise crushing of our history... They want to rewrite the auto industry too, just like the American story...

Paul, ya crack me up, doing all that "thinking", (messing the "back 40", at 3mph!) HA! Anyway, think I remember seeing that "CC Piper ride". Also know of "Citibria", same low and slow, doing CC. I been "Oshkosh" when lived Illinois. 85 to 89, then back the road the bike, CC, as can't do Sturgis, and Oshkosh, same time. Then did 4 CC roads trips, 1990 to 94, when got retired WAY early, and moved west coast. 19 years a bum here now! But on CC plane rides? A friend mine and his cousin...both plane freaks, and SUPER SNOW skiers!" Well, Vic was rated a V-Tail Bonanza. Him and Billy..(battled cancer 20 years, passed a few years back.) They did a CC "low and slow". But Vic has moved all the way up to a 8 seater Citation jet, private pilot them, on call and based Denver now. And too "rent the plane"..$2000 HR! I have a vid them, doiing a CC plane ride! Plus my Neph is Aerobatic rated, and been up with him in SoCal, doing Hammerheads, rolls and spins, inverted! HA!..Tandem seater Champion Decathlon, "David Clarks " on..mandatory "Chutes" on, out Santa Paula. Damn, what a great day, with my young punk kid, showing me , then?.."Uncle Bob, you have the airplane"...WOW!
