I went from a dual point Mallory dist to a HEI and there was I wire going from the alternator to the resistor block for the old points setup and I know a HEI is only a one wire unit just 12 volts and the ground is for the tach but what do I do with that wire that is coming off the alternator do I just tie it into the 12 volt wire going to the distributer any help would be appreciated

Just run that wire to either the battery, or I personally like to put it on the battery cable post on the starter. Especially since most alt setups are pass side. A short 10gauge wire from the alt to the starter battery cable terminal and that's it.

Might need a diode on that wire...if the motor starts and charges
but won't shut off with the key, you will know why.

I've already put the diode in thanks to radio shack haha all right ill hook it up tomorrow after work and see what happens thanks guys

From what I get from your question, the wire to the alternator was previously getting switched 12 volts to excite the alternator. If you run it directly from a hot 12v source to the alternator you will have a constant drain on the battery. It should be connected so that when you turn off the engine there is no power to that wire.

If you have a 1 wire alternator then ignore the comment above.

And it doesn't charge unless that wire is hooked up
GM alternator? Did you try revving it up? GM alternators and the last motorola i had would run single wire, all i had to do was shoot a quick rev to get it started. According to a GM engineer it has something to do with residual magnetism in the rotor generating enough current to get the process started. Brown trigger wire on a GM only needs voltage to initialize the circuit.

What he said. You can also run that wire from the charging post of the alternator to the "2" pin on the alt to make a loop. This will help trigger it with the revs. Leave "1" disconnected.

yeah it is i GM alternator and when i reved iy up it ddnt change at all yeah i wasd thinking about doing that one wire deal when i was at work today ive seen that done before

Well I got the charging problem solved I just tied the wire that used to go to the 12 volt side of the resistor block when I had the points to the wire that feeds the 12 volts to the distributer and I have 13.9 volts when I put a volt meter on the battery Thanks for all the info guys

The next thing I'm gonna do is God risk of the damn amp gauge and put a volt meter in it I don't like those amp gauges at all

Respectfull of "old school" Amp guages however have always found more value in the Volt guage for monitoring and diagnostic purposes too happy to see you resolved your problem Tom
