Chicago announces mass closing of elementary schools

"CHICAGO (Reuters) - Chicago will close 54 schools and 61 school buildings by the beginning of the next academic year in the country's third-largest public school district, a move that education experts called the largest mass closing in the nation.

The district will shutter 53 elementary schools and one high school, primarily in Hispanic and African-American neighborhoods. The district, which has a $1 billion annual deficit, has said it needs to close underutilized schools to save money.

Enrollment in Chicago Public Schools has fallen 20 percent in the last decade, mainly because of population declines in poor neighborhoods. The district said it can accommodate 511,000 students, but only about 403,000 are enrolled. It said that nearly 140 of its schools are more than half empty.

The controversial decision to close dozens of schools follows a bitter strike by Chicago teachers last September, fought partly over the Chicago Teachers Union's accusation that Mayor Rahm Emanuel was undermining community schools in poor areas of the city

Thats a given even.

The news was saying that drop out rates in some schools is high which could be another reason

I'm sure they'll blame it on the republicans and the sequester.

"Obama can be linked to Democratic Socialists of America"
Writing in the radical (and Democratic Socialists of America connected) Chicago magazine In These Times, in March 2008, Joel Bleifuss asserted;

In particular, Obama can be linked to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the Democratic Party-oriented organization that is a member of the Socialist International

Democratic Socialists of America
Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is the largest socialist organization in the US. It is one of two official U.S. affiliates of the Socialist International. It was formed in 1982 from a merger of the Michael Harrington led Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee and the smaller New American Movement.

DSA works inside the Democratic Party and has cross membership with the Communist Party USA, Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism, Socialist Party USA and the Green Party USA.

No wonder people are so confused. So you're saying the Green Party is really RED? Wait, I thought the republicans were the RED party. I am soooooo confused

They keep saying that closing schools is going to save money," said Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis. "This will not save money. It's going to cost money and it's going to leave abandoned buildings, which is another recipe for disaster."

LMAO I guess if you close all of them it would be horribly expensive.

not the same but similar thinking.

One of my employees one day wanted time off. He cited how much money I would save by not having to pay him. I said "duh !! I never thought of it like that. How about I send everyone home. We will save a ton"

Just got back from a week long trip to Chicago, haven't been home in 4 yrs. My 93 yr old Grandfather (a WWII vet) had a wonderful service and military burial.

I grew up on the southside and my neighboorhood is still pretty nice if you don't have to go to school there. When I was in high school, I traveled across town to Whitney Young Magnet (had to test to get in) which was ranked 10 in the nation for academics back then and is still one of the best in the nation.

Most of my remaining family and childhood friends have moved to nice suburbs on downtown (still super nice and clean). I stayed with one friend for 2 days in the hood and it made me sad when I drove around as the violence has gotten out of control. My friend keeps the 2 boys extremely busy with multiple sports and activities (his wife was out of town with their sons who travel for baseball) and they have zero free time to hang out. That is the only way to make it work.

Chicago is still a great place to live as long as you don't live in the hood (which is another conversation) and can stand the weather (and I cannot).

The Chicago public school system has been terrible for a long time and there are many reasons why. It makes me sad.
Of course I have many feelings on how/why this is, but it isn't worth getting into....

I wish the messiah community organizer would have stuck around and cleaned the place up.

That right their is the recipe for success, a mother and father involved in their lives. How many of the kids that are in trouble are the product of a father that runs around impregnating multiple women and then never having anything to do with the upbringing of the kids.
