Sunday I made a fourth attempt at the stretch of the Bow River known as "Horseshoe Canyon" by the rafters and FINALLY made it to the power dam. The rapid I had only seen in the distance in previous runs was f$#*ing way bigger than I thought it was lol

Read online last nite they rate that a class 4 (out of 5)and I was definitely a bit nervous shooting it. River probably climbed 30 or more feet in 150 yards or so. My buddy asked me if I had a backup plan if I got off the line I had chosen, convo went something like this...

"well, see this rock we're standing on thats a cube about 30x30x30? first Im gonna run directly into it crushing the nose of the boat, THEN Ill panic" LOL

there wasnt really any other lines to take without plunging into some big holes and alot of really airated water. There was a couple scoping out the rapid on the other side of the river, I assume for rafting purposes etc. Sadly they had walked back into the woods before we ran it because I am certain they would have been utterly stunned to see us attempt, and make it thru there haha

Buddy was high-5ing me when we made it up and was all pumped but I was trying to remind him that we still had to run back down it! lol

May as well have been driving over the brink of Niagara Falls going down cause with the nose slightly up I couldnt see jack when trying to line up my drop in.

(Dont worry I had the helmet cam running the entire day and video looks good. :D)

Spent the afternoon running above the dam as far as we could go before hitting the national park boundary. Probably one of the best, most satisfying days of boating Ive had in ages

You guys will LOVE the channels I ran thru Dead Mans Flats (no kidding thats what its called)

And of course had to finish off the day with getting stuck and having a good push in a REALLY cold river :D

Looks great!...but-how the hell do you get the boat out of there, considering, I do not drive my boat onto anything like you seem to have in your pics, I do not know the standard order of operation when driving a perfectly fine running boat all over rocks, then beaching it there?
one more thing, you will never even sit behind the wheel of my boat, much less drive it dude, you guys up there are a bit nutz! :D

Well... ummm....errrrr, Im not so sure one could really call it "beaching" really, that sorta implies a certain level of "intentional" doing. I think the term "getting stuck", is a more appropriate as it more accuratly implies I had no intentions of "stopping" there, it just kinda happened LOL

As far as getting out it involved 2 guys getting far more exercise than we needed to and extensive use of those aluminum bars I "just happen" to carry in my boat haha

Boat wouldnt even semi float till we pushed back to the dead tree across from where I was standing, so it took a bit of time with rests required and the water was COLD. Guess we tried to be "tough guys" and not use the waders I also keep onboard which made the feet a bit numb haha

Ironically my split second decision to take that channel and not the first one (which is to the right in the pic)right beside the bank proved a mistake as it was narrower but slightly deeper and I may have made it thru. Albeit Im sure my passenger would have been taking branches in the face as his side of the boat would have been literally rubbing the bank to keep the pump in the deeper water. Oh well, next time! lol

The boat was fine obviously and this is why it has a QT100 steel skid plate and a 1/2" 6061 keel.

And Im offended after years of entertaining you guys with my antics and you wont let me drive your boat, humph!

I'd be gentle with it i swear hil:)

I have Rafted Class IV rapids and if you drove your boat through them you are absolutley focking insane. I gotta see this video. :D

When we climbed up on the bank to scope the rapid out I left my phone in the boat and I didnt get any pics from shore(I did film it tho)

I did look around on some rafting sites but had a hard time figuring out whats where and google maps photo's have clouds in that section of river grrrrrr! I only really found one "half decent" pic looking downstream. This only shows about 1/4 of the rapid and really not even the bigger parts of it.

I've attached a pic I took the first time out looking upstream and you can kinda match up the side rock faces with the one I found online. The one looking down was probably taken from near where that couple was looking at the river.


Mud, I think if you stuffed me into a Kayak or raft and made me go down this I'd be sh%*tin too LOL

The fact that you are crazy is a given. I just wanted to comment on the fact of how lucky you are to be able to Jet boat is such beautiful part of the World. Forget the jumper cables and some cash, I guess cheater bars and waders are the way of the North! What else do you pack that us flatlanders might find interesting.

I agree that is beutiful country and looks great, but do we really want to know what else he packs? He is already running his jet on rocks while carrying a dude in waders as a passenger instead of a nice sandy beach with a chick in a bikini. Some things we're just better off not knowing. :)hand

So true.. I was thinking more along the lines of SatPhone, Rifle, Impeller, welder, etc.

Haha well find me a chick that doesnt mind the cold water, waders and hitting rocks/jumpin logs(and who looks good in a bikini) and she will be the first to get the shotgun seat. Sadly that kinda gal seems to be more for the lake boating side of things. Thats why I bought the 31 Scarab ;)

Funny the female species also seems far less enthusiastic about pushing when you get stuck. And pushing with someone still in the boat REALLY sucks haha

Its definitely some nice country to boat in without a doubt.

Basically I try to carry some basic stuff for tools and safety but mostly gear to get unstuck, two pry bars, come along and cable/ropes fopr the really bad ones. You want to feel prepared but at the same time want to keep the boat light too. Often arent too many boats around for assistance so you need to be self sufficient if possible.

Im also going to experiment with "parachutes" this year. Very similar to drift anchors you see but larger and heavier duty. There is often some fast flowing waters very nearby to where you're stuck and they would likely offer alot of additional pulling power if harnessed correctly. Sorta like an extra pusher. Keeping the boat light is key tho.

Going up hill seems like a blast. Down hill just seems scary and out of control. Which way is more likely to end up badly?

"Downhill" is much worse for sure. As you said u have the river current to deal with which means you're likely carrying more speed into technical sections and you have less ability to steer beacuase relative water speed is lower. Also less time to think. As you may have guessed in cases like this there is most certainly a signifigant speed to the water. Keeping the nose down to be able to see is tough and going into one of these rapids at 55 mph probably isnt the best idea lol

Look at pic two of the video captures; thats dropping off the first ledge heading downstream and I couldnt see the lower end till you are well committed to your "line". Its made a bit worse in sportier jetboats which you drive sitting down because your head is 2-3 feet lower than in stand up types. Add in that you have to face upstream in the current to do any close up pre-viewing from above the rapid and it all makes for some exciting times!

Really rewarding when you make it thru a section like that tho. It would actually be considerably worse with less flow because altho the standing waves would be smaller there would be a higher risk of hitting rocks. Snapping off the pump or breaking a nozzle etc would be very very bad in that rapid.

I cant capture the video to my PC right now, its not being my "friend" lately but as soon as I do you know you guys will be the first to know ;)
