I have a Merlin 2 Tall deck ( 516 ) that is filled up to the bottom of the water pump holes . Should I be concern on running this engine for a very long time . I know the oil temp have been hitting around 245 after about 8-10 passes , but what about hot spots in the block ? I somethime will cruise about 6-8 mile one way and then wait awhile and cruise back .

I lost a a rod bearing last outing and it took out the crank , another rod and scared 6 pistons . Do not belive oil temp caused the bearing failure , I think the bearing just took a dump ,, Can;t tell ..

So before I rebuild this engine , just wanted to see what i should be concerned about .

The engine was originally in a race boat and then i bought it and installed in my Cole TR-4 river boat ,

Block has been to the machine shop and they said it would clean up at 4.560 , The block can be bored to 4.625 is what I been told .

So , if I use this block , I was thinking af making a 588 from it 4.560 bore and a 4.50 crank ..

So what should I be concerened about on a Merlin 2 block filled up to the bottom of the water pump holes ??

Your carring less water in the block than a stocl GM tall deck would because the deck is thicker. Don't really know why somebody would fill a Merlin with a 4.500 or 4.530 bore, or why they would fill it that high. The whole idea behind block fill is shorten the unsupported length of the bore. And I wouoldn't get stingy with the water. Like a -16 in and maybe a -12 out. Never the less, its not your biggest problem, and I doubt that was what lead up to you bearing issue. BEARINGS DON'T JUST TAKE A DUNP!!!Unless this thing has a zillion hours on it, there is a reason. they fail due clearences, tight and loose, rod bearings can fail due to loose mains, crappy oil pans that lead to oil starvation and they can from HEAT. If you are not running a oil cooler,....get one. If you are not running a good syn oil....start.

I agree that a bearing should not take a dump and just go bad , but I could not see any good reason . Anyway , I do not know why they filled this block ,did not know until I purchased it and then it was too late .. They were running pretty high compression and a 300 Hp shot of nitrous on the engine before I got it . I still do not think it needed to be filled.
I am running Mobil 1 synthetic oil , no oil cooler , but plan on installing one now . has a Milodon pan with the trap doors and baffles .
It had a scat crank , scat H -beam rod and diamond piston in it when it went bad

So with an oil cooler , good synthitic oil and a good bottom end , it should survive with the block being filled ?

I would like to keep the block and reuse it because of the cubic inches , but I can alway dig out my old 454 block and build it.if I need to . Then sell this to a drag racer ..

billy's block is 1/2 filled with twin turbos, and we have to still make the damn thing warm up just to make a pass:mad: you're runnin a pump aren't ya or just picking up on the plates?

i don't see why you'd hav any issues then , oil temps will be alil higher but you said you were gettin a cooler, run da biatch:)devil uncle bill needs to find a oil cooler for his tt496:)bulb i'm putting just your basic air cooled tranny cooler on my lil single turbo 325 and using the factory oil cooler outlets on the motor for in/out. sumthing is beta than nuthin:)bulb i wanted to 1/2 my ls block but couldn't figure out how:)sphss

i have four bbc filled to the water pump holes 2 bowties and two std blocks dont have any issue with running a magnaflow pump 140-160 water temps
i dont run a oil cooler yet but may someday i just havn't had any issues yet.
synthetic oil will help with oil temps.

as many will tell you ,and if you do a search on milodon pans and pickups here you might want to rethink that deal and switch over to a stephs setup with the kickout with anything over 1/4 stroke

the power levels that are available with the big bore blocks 4.5 or larger is a hole new world compared to the small bore blocks and once you go to this bore size there is no going back.

Something most people don't think about is with the block filled, you are forcing all of the water to run past the hottest part of the cylinder,the top couple of inches. This should result in more heat being carried away by the cooling water.Food for thought.

I didn't see this at first. I am going to assume that you are running off the flywheel, and the long ass pick up tube. If so, don't get rid of the block, ash can the pan. Seriously. Like I said before, bearings don't just take a dump.

:)devil milodon pans suck asssss. we've cured 2 boats with oil pressure issues at wot by just switching to hamburger pans, throwing the milodon over in a corner for bolt trays:D

Well that suck , because I bought another brand new Mioldon pan and never have installed it , I think it to late to return it ..

I never had any trouble before with the old Milodon pan , what are the issues with these pans ...The one on my old 454 ran 8 years with no trouble , it was a mild build though ... The one on the engine never had an oil pressure problem , even wide open ...

Yes the pick up tube in long , and you are correct I am running off the flywheel ..

Thanks for the info . Yes you are correct , running off the flywheel and it is facing the front of the boat , so It has a long pick up tube to go to the sump at the back of the boat ..

Yes that preferated box / pick up box looks cheap , what would you weld in it place ? maybe one off of an original style pick up tube

I just check and I still have two months to return teh Milodon pan to Jegs if I need to .
