crankshaft hub removal

ok, so ive removed my blower pulley off the crankshaft and removed the big bolt from the crank, and cant seem to get the crank hub just outside the timing chain cover off! its pressed on right? Not threaded on. oh yeah its a 69 chevy 427. thanks

You need to buy/rent a balancer puller from an auto parts store. 2 or 3 bolts screw into it and a larger center screw sits against the crank nose. When you tighten the center bolt it'll pull the balancer off.

It may be time to step up to a real puller. Besides, when you go to reinstall it you're going to need something like this anyway. NO, YOU CANNOT JUST PULL IT ON WITH THE CRANK BOLT!!!!


Heating the hub with a propane torch will help.
When you go to reistall it, coat the crank snout with some anti sieze. It makes removing it the next time much easier.

Bob - That Webster piece is really nice. Thanks for posting this.

I too have run into a couple of drive hubs and balancers that have been difficult to remove over the years. Some of these problems may be due to (1) misinstallation, too tight or too loose or (2) hold down bolt coming loose letting balancer move and seize.

The more recent was a mis-installed blower hub. We fabricated a simple device where a regular 2 ton jack was mounted between two steel plates. One plate had a hole in the middle for the ram to protrude and also had holes drilled to mount to the hub or balancer. The "back" end was a solid round plate with 1/2" grade eight all thread attaching the two plates while sandwiching the jack in between. Then just opertate the jack and pull the balancer/hub. Some heat may be needed. This is relatively inexpensive tool just requiring some fab time, but not near as cool as that Webster unit.

I am a tool freak and don't know if Bob's posting is a good thing for my pocketbook:)

If you are able to move the engine, might suggest you take it to local machine shop. If you yourself do not have the proper tools, the small charge if any will be worth it. I ran into a similar situation trying to remove damper I had not installed myself. Ended up taking boat to shop where I bought my parts. Found after finally getting hub off, the aftermarket crank snout was oversized and had in excess of .005 interference with the damper hub. Suggest if using aftermarket cranks and dampers, it is a good idea to mike both before trying to put them together. Good luck.
