I just got a baja hull with a 460 in it the head numbers are D20E- AB I want to find out if there is anything else done the the motor .I think the boat and the motor is original. Please tell me.as.much information as possible I am tiring to restore it .my dad had it in shed for 23 years. I took off the value covers and the heads look new he told me.it was running when he parked it .thanks

D2o

The D2O head is a rare and sought after Ford facrory iron head. almost as good as the original factory iron CJ heads which are DOO castings.

according to 460forums.com,there the most undesireable stock head.low c/r,prone to detonation.c9,s ,dove's or even d3,s seem to be a better choice.I,m sure some more experanced guy will chime in...lakes?

The D2OE-AB cylinder heads are the factory Ford issued Police Interceptor (PI) heads. Relative to the typical 460 passenger car heads, they are a modest compression, high performance cylinder head.

The D2OE-AB heads were used primarily on 1972 & 1973 429PI engine (and possibly 1973 460 PI engines). While anything is possible, it is highly unlikely that they are original to your vessel. Either someone did a head swap or a complete engine swap (which would mean that you now have a 429 in your boat).

We have performed countless cylinder head swaps and countless jet boat builds for Ford 429-460s. While the D2OE heads are considered performance pieces, properly prepped standard passenger car heads are a better choice in your specific application. However, if you were to rebuild your engine and increase its displacement to, say, 500+\- cubic inches then the D2OE heads would be an awesome choice. Even if they are not ideal for your current build, they are still worth keeping on your engine for the time being, and worth holding onto generally speaking.

A godaweful huge quantity of D2OE-AB heads were produced and they are still far more plentiful. They are nowhere near as rare as the 429 CJ heads. If they were, then they'd be valued at the same typical value as the CJ heads but instead the castings are typically valued at about half that of iron CJs.

You are confusing the D2OE-AB casting with the similarly numbered D2VE heads (D2VE-AA or D2VE-A2A).

The D2VE head is an open chamber cylinder head which--by nature of most all open chamber heads--is detonation prone in higher performance, naturally aspirated engine combos which must run low grade gasoline. And higher performance naturally aspirated engine combos which operate on low grade gasoline is what most hot rod enthusiasts build, hence the D2VEs poor reputation today.

That being said, in other applications the D2VE open chamber heads used to be THE choice in a cylinder head long before there were a multitude of aftermarket heads for the Ford 385 Series engine. Most notably they were used in blown alcohol engines; alcohol essentially eliminates the possibility of detonation and the open chamber design offers improved breathing/cylinder filling over some of the closed chamber heads. I have known of D2VE heads used in an alcohol burning twin turbo that generated 1731 horsepower, and I currently have a pair here that certainly can support more horsepower that that.

All these heads simply need to be utilized in an application to which they are best suited and they'll really shine.
