I am sort of over the whole "that is a weak car" phase and dont care what people think, plus I still have the V8 RWD 5 speed if I need it. I am sick of pissing gas money away during the week, on things like soccer practices and taking the kid to school. Here is what I am looking at, care to share your input?

VW Jetta TDI
Fusion Hybrid
Altima Hybrid
Camry Hybrid

The one I am leaning to most is the Jetta TDI. It seems to be the cheapest, the no maintenance for 3 years is appealing and it gets great mileage. What is the scoop with the diesel motor in them though? are they long lasting like most other diesels? anyone heard of problems?

We have a '99 Jetta withh 100k on it (Not TDI tho). The nickel and dime stuff inside is breaking, but the engine still runs like new. That's a VW trait, good motor-drive train, interior parts start dying after aboiut 5-6 years.

Another option: I have an '04 Scion xB, paid 16K for it new. 31 MPG average City-Highway, fits three car seats in the back seat, and it even had enough room for 17 apple boxes in it when I moved. I lowered it 2" and threw some cheapo 17" rims on it...Still not the best looking rig on the road, but so far it's been a gem of a ride.

The newer ones look a bit better, but since this is America folks demanded bigger engines so I believe MPG is down in the mid -high 20's. All in all Toyota reliability at a decent price.

Few years back I researched my a$$ off looking for a reliable fuel efficient smaller car...it had to get me 175 mile round trip daily.
I sure wanted the VW Golf-Jetta Diesel however, those things are plagued with problems due to all the emission crap smothering their engines. And as mentioned prior the little things like door latches, window tracks etc start to fail >so much for German engineering >seems they over think the simple things and make it 10 times more complicated.

All my research took me to a Corolla-S 31 city 41 hwy. Very nice riding little car.

OF those 4 I think the hybrid fusion would be my pick.

The Altima and Camry share the same synergy drive system with the nod in build quality and interior going to the camry- but you see yourself everywhere.

The jetta will likely fall apart and have electrical, window lift problems, and door latches as mentioned- but will run strong

Th fusion has an equal or greater economy than all of them, looks better (IMO) and seems to be getting more than its fair share of auto journalist praise these days winning all the shootouts Ive read.

I also thing the fusion dash is a step above all the rest in terms of information displayed to the driver up to the poit of the falling leaf part that Id personally lock out.

Heres my rank-

Fusion
Camry
Altima
Jetta

Let us know!

We have been looking as well. You can't beat a used Honda Civic. A nice one can be had for $12k-$16k. (new body style)

New, I love the Ford Fusion Hybrid. Electric only up to 47mph. So very little ICE running while on the city streets. Plus the dash is killer. A loaded hybrid will run you over $32k OTD.

We have 2 prius hybrids along with our gas guzzlers, one has 80k + on it the other almost 40k....45-47mpg minimum on my 04 and wife gets 51 avg on her 06.......great around town cars even short trips from vegas to cali or vegas to the river...nothing like driving a big boat but still great cars and neither has been to the shop other than oil changes and 2 minor factory paid fixes for the older one when it first came out back in 04.....If you can overcome the looks you Can't beat the mileage....oh and before I hear the slow comment they are not slow by any means, can keep up with any midsized mpg car out there and have great pick up to (106 mph and the Gov kicks in)......just my .02...

Let me throw into the mix...I need a little more room than a civic/corolla. I will have to put the crew in there from time to time. Wife/2 Kids and the accessories that go along with them.

Kind of wished I still had them. The one had 305k on it when I sold it and still got out of its own way in a flash. :) 23mpg. The other had 180k and was still strong as could be.

Recommending the ford over the Altima to you was not easy for me.

I loved my 95 maxima- has 250K on it adn my sister drives it every day.

I Have a g35 coupe and a titan now. Nohting but love for Nissan. that said the hybrid altima is a toyota drive system mated to a nissan 4- its good but lacks the refinement the camry and the fusion have.

Civic is great, but small.

I could get over the "weird" of the prius , but thats me- a lot of poeple dont like the center "pod" dash, but no doubt they are great cars- not being on the list of choices I did not reccomend

The new pri'i are VERY nice, but dont have quite the room the fusion has and I dont think the dash is as sophisticated or cool.

If you are open for options a used rx400h is super roomy fast and quiet travelling companion and you can get it in AWD as well for those needing a better all rounder.

I'm gonna go with your avatar......;)

As everyone's said, the Jetta and Fusion are the two best options. The reliability of VW is attrocious by all accounts, and the Fusion has been a great car for everyone I know with them, and not to mention the better looking, bigger car. Isn't the Jetta a Compact, ie the same size as a Corrolla?
