Have a 90 Commander with 454 stock, mallory marine distributor with points. Was thinking of replacing points with more modern mag pickup. Nothing wrong with it, just can't leave stuff alone. Did my own fuel injection for the sand car so what's an ignition upgrade on the boat should be fairly easy.

MSD 6al box would be nice but out of budget. Read that an HEI module to control spark with a duration that's longest of the big three and as is a close to MSD as possible, but still not really close. However $20 for a HEI module is more my budget and my engine is not making huge power. The HEI module needs a magnetic trigger, not points.

Can't use a whole wrecking yard HEI dizzy, need a marine one for enclosed engine. New marine full HEI dizzy's are expensive.

Was thinking of replacing the points in my existing dizzy with a Mopar reluctor and pickup. Modify Mopar dizzy base to fit in Mallory dizzy, then grind down the points lobe and fit the reluctor wheel. Wire up with HEI module. Can also use a newer (up to 2000) remote mount HEI coil and module mount/heatsink.

Couple of questions:
1. Should I worry about grinding down the points lobe? Can't go back to points if I do that. Does anyone have an old dizzy with an extra lobe? What other dizzy parts are interchangeable with Mallory?

2. Are there downfalls if using the original cap and rotor with HEI coil? Wouldn't have to replace my plug wires. It seems like its a big deal on HEI swaps to use HEI wires with HEI, yet people use MSD boxes with more power and stock old style caps and wires. Will I get spark jumping with the old cap?

I take it you are too cheap to buy a Pertronix conversion for the Mallory and you enjoy doing things the hard way.
The Pertronix are $122. Not as cheap as they used to be. If I spent that much, may as well buck up and get an MSD6AL and keep the points. Low current won't kill them.

Rubbing block still wears and the timing still changes. Not sure why anybody would what to go thru all that shit. If you modify the internals of the distributor, it is no longer USCG approved, and if you should blow yourself up with your little modification, your insurance company will probably tell you to pound sand,

But if you feel you must fuck with the thing, at least this DOES NOT modify the distributor. But a HEI module hooked to any non hei distributor could be construed as a modification. The USCG and insurance companies tend to odd that way.

Asking because I really don't know. Wouldn't modifying the dizzy with a Petronix be considered modifying in the eyes of the USGC? If NO modifications are allowed then the only "legal" option is a whole approved system.

That link to the points square wave generator is interesting. And the guy brings up a lot of thoughtful issues with the points. The board also gives up the hei module dwell control.
