I want to lock out my Comp 9K but can not find any information on the procedures. All I found was;

"I used to know how" or “you pin the advance full”

That's not really a lot to go off of.

Any one who has done this before? Obviously you pin it, but is there provisions to lock it out?


I’m pretty sure I could send it in to Mallory but if its easy enough to do at home, why not. I

It’s for a SBC. Mechanical advance

Hmm didn't know they changed the design over the years. I bought it maybe 2-3 years ago? From a member here actually, Blown jet 68 I think it was.

I'll see if I can find some dates on it.

Yeah. Its relatively simple. You need to get the dizzy torn down till it looks like the pic in my post.
The arms on the top of the plate are used to limit the advance of the dizzy. Normally if you were trying to set the total advance of the dizzy you would have to remove the plate and set the arms.
You aren't trying to do that. All you have to do is loosen the screws holding the arms and rotate the arms inward all the way so they stop the weights under the plate from moving. When the weights can't move the advance is disabled.
Double check that the dizzy does not advance your timing any using a timing light when you rev it alittle.

Oh OK. That's easy enuff. Then you set timing on the crank to where you want it. I was always under the assumption that I counldnt. Thanks gn7.

Finally got around to shooting a pic. Doesn't quite look the same as the one posted.


Sorry about the crappy cell phone pic. Don't see any screws it's just springs.

You have the "newer" setup. Hang on and I'll see if I can dig that out. I had it when you first posted this, and your set is actually just as easy to do. Just different.

Of the 3 systems Mallory has used to adjust the maechanical advance, this is the worst to deal with. Progress and the never ending pursuit to reduce cost creeped in and trashed to better methods.

The deal with THIS method is that you are suppose to BEND that tab sticking up thru the slot to change the advance limits. No screws to loosen, no degree limit key, you simply bend that tab using those lines as a reference to limit the advance. You can't bend it too far, or too many times or the tab will break off:)sphss

If you grab the shaft and rotate it, counter clock wise(?) you should see that tab move to its limit and stop. Your only choice is to keep that tab from moving the best way you can.

Personally, if it was me, I would disassemble the dizzy mechanisim, drill and tap the base plate and drill the weights and lock the weight in the position they are or even tack them place with a mig welder, and remove the springs.
