I just read a notice about another enforcement effort that could affect some of us. We don't bring a dog but I know plenty that do.

So they expect us to bring proof of vaccinations? Yeah right. We ALWAYS have the leash ready to use, and we go WAY up river so as to have some sandbar that isn't too crowded. We are very aware of where our dog is at all times...if we feel like others are being bothered by her, we leash her up. Only takes a couple hours in the morning on the sandbar to wear her out anyway. We usually end up on a bar where there are many other dogs by the afternoon, and we have had no issues. She doesn't jump on boats, and is more interested in playing than bugging people. She's a 10 month old lab who loves nothing more than jumping off the boat onto a sandbar. It's dog heaven...I understand people being annoyed or even safety issues with some dogs, but we've NEVER had anyone complain or have an issue. In the past if we felt the dog(s) bothered others, we would simply leave. It's gonna be interesting to see how the enforcement of this is handled.

Here is what went on last year we witnessed a lab a wonderful breed run up and killed a little dog on the sandbar. The lab was not on a leash and the owner of the lab left the dog on the sandbar unsupervised and came back later after the melee was over. The owner of the little dog was going to kill the lab with a sandspike or inflict injury upon the lab. I stopped him in his rage and said he would be charged with a felony cruelty to animals and be arrrested---thankfully he calmed down.

Local law enforcement arrived and cooler heads prevailed the deputy also told him he would have arrested him had he injured the lab.

This is but one incident I can recount many were dogs are allowed to run free on sandbars and knock children over, urinate on items, crap on the sandbar and the owners not pick up after the dog. Lets face it not everyone is a responsible dog owner and these incidents cause a lot of problems.

I have personally cleaned up after someones dog and it can lead to arguments about responsible dog ownership. I am not shy and get pissed when these types of people do not have the decency to clean up after their pets---my biggest gripe.

As for enforcement if the LEO's get a complaint your gonna get a ticket or if they see your dog running all over the place unsupervised. If you act responsibly you should be fine this is what I was told by law enforcement on the topic.

Hey John...
Responsibility...that's the key. It's beyond me why anyone would leave their dog unsupervised. People should be watching their dogs with the same diligence they do their kids. So many people arrive and seem to forget they have a pet with them until it's time to go. Once it starts getting busy wherever we end up, unless we know a majority of the people there, we have a 30ft lead that we attach her to. Did the owner of the little dog have a leash? I'm asking only because I've had Emmy on her lead taking a walk several times at Hidden Shores, and I can't tell you how many "little" dogs, unleashed, run out from trailers and start barking and snapping at her. A few seconds later the owners run out to snatch them up, always with a quick "sorry." As a puppy, she always assumes they want to play with her; this may not be the case as she gets older...I dunno. It seems that always the little dogs in the park are the ones to be aggresive. Just an observation. It would be horrifying to watch any dog/pet be killed, hurt, etc. I just feel that 99% of the time any issues can be resolved by responsible owners.

On another note, are you going to be out on the 4th?

It's just one more way to raise revenue. I always let my dog off leash on the sandbar, but then again, we ALWAYS make sure he is well mannered, and are sure to clean up after him. It's like anything else, being responsible is the key. There was a Yuma CO Sheriff walking around the sand bar last weekend, warning people about the leash law. My dog, being lazy as hell, was asleep in a beach chair.

Hey Bill aka Cheezpanel:

Yes! we are going out on Tuesday for the whole week of the 4th of July.

As for the incident earlier in my post----the little pooch a puppy was sitting on the lap of the owners daughter and when the lab approached it the little fella jumped down and it was grabbed by the back of the neck and shook violently by the lab.

I was shocked and dumbfounded by the labs behavior--- the daughter was wailing the dad came uncorked rightly so. We later find out the older lab was left on the sandbar by it's owner---yup I am not making this shit up--- no leash--- no hey buddy can you watch my dog----nothing-----while the owner went back to Fishers to get some stuff from their trailer. Nice job huh moron!

It was crazy shit--- a little FYI we had a yellow lab and our dog wouldn't hurt a fly---our kids would try and climb on our lab when they were little and our dog wouldn't do a thing we had him for 13 years not so much as a growl. We love labs that is why we were shocked at the behavior of this one. Wife says it was a mix no way it was a pure lab.

Tell you what next time your on the sandbar a big one mind you---take a moment to observe the responsible dog owners and then look for the ones that are not--- then see which ones stick in your mindbulb.

P.S. I had an incident one time were a doberman was running all over the sandbar chasing other dogs. I told the guy hey get your dog under control someone is going to get hurt I get the yeah right buddy whatever look. Sure enough this dog bowled my two year old daughter over while running through our EZ up. It was f'n game on with the dog owner when it happened---not the dog's fault it was just being a dog.

Oh I know what you're saying...I can always tell who's responsible and who can care less. I can usually tell who the "dog people" are as well. But I certainly don't want to be the guy whose dog is ruining someone's good time. This is why 90% of the time we head so far up that not too many people are around. Usually pretty early. It's more fun for us to go up and let her play and romp and watch her have a good time for a couple of hours and then head back down. At this point she's so tired that she usually doesn't get out of the boat when we stop for quick visits with people we might run into on the way back. We're usually back at the trailer taking naps by 2 or 3pm. It's funny how the dog dictates what we actually do.
