We fired a blown engine on the run stand yesterday and are currious what color the exhaust should be? This is our first go around with E-85 so its all new to us, the exhaust was white at first and after we played with the carbs for a while to sinc them in it is a light grey now. The engine is very responsive, idles great and runs a great temp on the run stand.

The inside of the whole header is always stained red for me.
This is the header I run now,

This is the one from a few years back,


I don't quite understand it, the fuel is clear.

These headers have had many dozens of red hot cycles, maybe that has something to do with it. It's 304 stainless tubing.

Now please, tell me why one would need to apply a coating to a stainless steel (note spelling) header? Come on now, THINK hard before you make something up again. Jocko

Here is the chemical makeup of formaldehyde. See any iron in this? Formaldehyde is a very very minor byproduct of burning ethonal.
What is causing the RED again, where is the iron oxides coming from again. Jockorace hit this on the head. You need to give some thought before posting.
Now, I am giving you your chance. Tell us where the iron oxides are coming from. If you can't, or you wrong, your going to take one more ding in you flawless reputation here. Again!



Where did the red come from. I am going to guess from the same place the yellow comes from in my engine. But then, I run a saffron oil. They must have made Unchained's E85 from sugar beets.

At what compression ratio N/A do you think E-85 has an advantage over something like C-12 ? It at all other than price.

Under boost in a blow-thru application will the E-85 have a huge advantage other than just price?

From what I have been able to gather from Maxi, and the posts Unchained has made, the biggest gains are from boosted applications and the latent heat thing. Unchained removed his innercooler. the blowthru gys never had them, and they are both able to run pretty good boost numbers without them. I think Unchained could still benefit from a cooler if he wished to raise the boost. But he is making som much HP now, why bother with the extra weight and compexity. And I not 100% sure he would see that much. He would certainly have to push the turbo harder to overcome the coolers retriction to get the same boost back, and even harder to make even more. I doubt he would see anything at all at the same manifold pressure. And he is seeing some pretty high manifold temps BEORE the injectors. So the cooling effect must be working or he would be detonating big time.

Over C12? I doubt they can make more power. Its big attracktion isn't all power. Its price and availability. We have had this discussion in the GN class about allowing it. Some think that the stuff will create runaway speeds. Many of us say BS. Not over c16. some of us have learned the limits of C16, and its more than many think. But, you do have to run the cooler.

If they allowed it in the GN class, would I run it? I don't know. But I sure as hell would play with the stuff. But if I couldn't make the power, I would go back to the C16. Winning cost money. Not doing it to save money that for sure. Its never going to make more power because it is ethonal. Anyone that thinks that is way wrong. But in the GN class, we have a limited blower speed. If I could take out the cooler, and pickup some boost, it could possibly make at least the same power as C16. And you would have to be crazy not to run it.

You will never see the stuff in NHRA ProStock. Even if they allowed it tomorrow.

Good point, I'm going to have to look into replacing it in another 25 years or so. :)bulb

CNG also turns the exaust that redish color- remember seeing that on some industrial cng turbo'd 427 tall decks- I believe propane to do the same
also- let me go look at one of my forklifts to be sure tho....:)sphss

Thats not I was talking about . You need get edjucated. It's not, "very very minor". It's a VERY Mager byproduct of ETH.Eth is very corrosive. The red an't rust? How does rust form.:)hand

I have one, take a piece of metal and pour some E-85 on it and lite it. After it's done burning, let it sit for 2 or 3 days. You'll find that it will start to turn red from corrosion.Then think about what the inside of that motor looks like.

That would prove absolutely nothing. Why don't you also do the same thing with some gasoline and then compare them after. At least that would be close to objective.

If you want to skip the results they both will rust as heating the metal removes all the surface protectants and leaves them exposed to oxidation (rust).

Plus, that was a response to GN7. Not you. The metal test proves my point on the effects of Famaldihyde on metals. Are all you guys the same or what??
